Check your SSD with a tool that supports its interface—start with Windows’ storage-health view for an NVMe drive, or use the SSD maker’s utility or a SMART tool when that view is unavailable. Read warning flags, spare capacity, temperature, and error information together. A reported lifespan percentage is an endurance estimate, not a countdown to failure, so keep independent backups even when the drive reports healthy.

1. Identify the SSD before choosing a diagnostic tool

Find the target drive’s manufacturer, model, and interface. The key distinction is whether it is an NVMe drive or a SATA SSD; the diagnostic route and available readings can differ. A drive’s model information may be available in your operating system’s storage settings or the manufacturer’s utility.

Also note how the drive is connected. A controller, enclosure, or other connection path may not pass diagnostic data through, so a tool may show incomplete information even when the drive is working.

2. Choose a tool that can see your drive

Method Drive coverage Best use Important limit
Windows storage-health view NVM SSDs Quick access to supported health attributes, including estimated remaining life, available spare, and temperature Microsoft says this view does not monitor SATA SSDs or HDDs. Microsoft Support
Drive manufacturer’s utility Depends on the maker, drive model, and system Model-specific health and endurance readings Use the current utility intended for your drive; support is not universal. Intel documents the Intel Memory and Storage Tool for Intel SSDs, while SanDisk documents its Dashboard for internal SSD health and endurance checks. Intel Support; SanDisk Support
smartmontools Cross-platform option for Linux, macOS, Windows, and FreeBSD SMART visibility when the operating system view is unavailable or you need another diagnostic path Results depend on whether the drive, operating system, controller, and connection expose the required data. smartmontools

Use Windows’ view for an NVMe SSD

Open Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Disks & volumes, select the relevant disk, then open Properties. Review the displayed drive-health attributes. Labels and available details can vary with the system and drive.

If a SATA SSD is missing from this health view, that is expected: Windows’ view covers NVM SSDs, not SATA SSDs or hard drives. Use a compatible manufacturer utility or SMART tool instead.

Use a manufacturer utility for model-specific readings

Choose the tool the maker currently recommends for the exact drive and operating system. The Intel Memory and Storage Tool and SanDisk Dashboard are examples for their respective products, not universal SSD utilities. Follow the maker’s instructions to select the drive and locate its health or endurance report.

Use a SMART utility when the other routes do not fit

smartmontools offers SMART tools across several operating systems. Its output and available fields depend on hardware and connection support. If the utility cannot access the drive’s SMART or health data, try a supported connection or the drive maker’s recommended tool rather than interpreting missing fields as a clean bill of health.

3. Read the health indicators together

Record the drive model and the utility used when you review a report. Names, exposed fields, and interpretation can differ by vendor and software path. For an NVMe drive, inspect these fields when they are available:

  • Critical Warning: A warning can signal low available spare capacity, degraded reliability, or read-only operation. Microsoft says degraded reliability is associated with significant media-related errors or an internal subsystem error. Microsoft Support
  • Percentage Used: The manufacturer’s estimate of the share of endurance used. It is vendor-specific and based on actual usage and the manufacturer’s life prediction, not elapsed calendar time. Microsoft Learn
  • Available Spare: A device-reported percentage of spare capacity. Microsoft documents a normalized range from 0 to 100 percent; the value is a health field, not a time estimate. Microsoft Learn
  • Temperature: Check the reported value against the drive maker’s guidance for the model. A reading is useful context, but it does not by itself establish remaining lifespan.
  • Media errors and error-log information: Review these where the tool exposes them. Errors and warning flags provide context that a single endurance percentage cannot.

4. Understand what “remaining lifespan” can—and cannot—tell you

NVMe Percentage Used is not the percentage of calendar life that has elapsed, and it does not reveal a reliable number of years remaining. Microsoft defines it as a vendor-specific estimate of NVM subsystem life used, based on actual usage and the manufacturer’s prediction. Intel says its counter starts at 0 and rises as the drive is used, toward 100. These describe endurance metrics, not a predicted failure date. Microsoft Learn; Intel Support

Do not convert the figure into years without a model-specific method and an explicit, qualified basis. A low percentage does not rule out failure from another cause; a high percentage is not a precise forecast of when the drive will stop working. Interpret it alongside critical warnings, available spare, error information, and guidance for the specific model.

5. Respond promptly to warnings and protect your files

If the report shows a critical warning, degraded reliability, low spare capacity, or read-only status, prioritize protecting important files and investigate promptly. These flags indicate a problem to address; they are not a calibrated countdown to total failure. Consult the maker’s guidance for the model and check whether the tool or connection may be limiting the report.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Maintain independent backups regardless of the reported health result. A status of “passed” or a favorable percentage cannot guarantee continued operation for a particular period. If a diagnostic confirms a serious problem, consider a compatible replacement only after checking the computer’s supported interface, form factor, and capacity.
