If an integrated GPU appears in Windows 11’s “Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media” menu, that listing alone does not mean the GPU is physically removable or that it has failed. Microsoft describes integrated GPUs as built into a Windows device and the eject menu as a way to safely remove supported hardware. The official guidance available does not establish one universal cause for this GPU listing.
Why can you eject a graphics card in Windows 11?
The menu is intended for devices that should be ejected before they are physically disconnected. Seeing a graphics adapter there does not show that it can be safely removed from a laptop or motherboard. Microsoft defines integrated GPUs as built into a Windows device, and notes that some laptops and tablets combine integrated and discrete GPUs and switch between them according to workload and power use. Microsoft’s safe-removal guidance and its GPU overview do not provide a GPU-specific eject procedure.
A 2025 report suggests PCIe hot-plug configuration as one possible reason Windows may list a GPU for ejection, but it does not establish that explanation for every PC or for this particular symptom. Treat it as a possibility, not a confirmed diagnosis. Windows Central’s report notes that the root cause is uncertain.
Is it safe to click Eject on an integrated GPU?
Do not use Eject on an active graphics adapter as a troubleshooting test. Microsoft’s instructions concern supported devices meant to be disconnected; they do not describe what should happen when a GPU is ejected. If you clicked it accidentally and the adapter disappears or display behavior changes, restart Windows and inspect the adapter in Device Manager. Restarting is a cautious general troubleshooting step, not a documented GPU-specific fix.

- PCI-E 1x to 16x Enhanced Extender Riser Adapter with USB 3.0 & 6pin SATA Power Cable length:60cm
- With 4 x FP solid capacitors, making graphics power supply more stable and secure , With SATA 15pin Male to 6pin power cable, strengthen power supply,
- so that graphics power from the motherboard independent,so multi-card reduce motherboard burden.
- PCI-E 16x slot with lock for easy removal and fixed graphics card , so that graphics will not fall from the slot
- Compatible with 1x,4x,8x,16x card
Check the adapter in Device Manager
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters. Note the adapter names and whether either has a warning icon.
- Open the adapter’s properties to review its device status and any error message. Microsoft explains that Device Manager provides device status and driver information; a yellow exclamation point indicates a problem and is accompanied by an error message. Microsoft’s Device Manager guide describes these checks.
Confirm which adapter the eject menu names. A system may have both integrated and discrete graphics, so a menu entry for a graphics adapter does not by itself identify which one is involved.
If the adapter name or driver looks wrong
Microsoft Basic Display Adapter appears
That name means Windows is using a preloaded generic display driver rather than the graphics manufacturer’s specific driver. Intel’s identification guidance explains how to identify Intel graphics in Windows 10 and Windows 11. See Intel’s adapter-identification steps.

Install a compatible driver
Check for a compatible graphics driver through Windows Update or the support page for your exact PC or motherboard model. Computer makers may customize graphics drivers for their systems, so the OEM package can be preferable to a generic one. Microsoft recommends contacting the hardware manufacturer if Device Manager cannot find a compatible driver. Microsoft’s driver-update guidance explains the Device Manager route; Intel also discusses OEM drivers and missing adapters in its graphics-adapter troubleshooting guidance.
If the integrated GPU is missing or disabled
If the integrated adapter does not appear in Device Manager, or is disabled, contact the computer or motherboard manufacturer to ask whether the BIOS or a hybrid-graphics setting controls it. Intel’s guidance on BIOS and hybrid mode concerns missing integrated graphics; it does not show that either setting causes an adapter to appear in the eject menu.

- Compatible graphics cards: Any GPU with available drivers on the official NVIDIA or AMD websites can be used. For NVIDIA, this ranges from the top-end RTX 5090 all the way down to the GTX 450. The same applies to AMD graphics cards. (Do not recommend Graphics Cards with Intel)
- Compatible devices: Most Windows10/11/Linux -based laptop, desktop, or console (including the Lenovo Legion Go) with a Thunderbolt port and an Intel/AMD processor can be used (some console with USB4 may require a BIOS update to enable USB4 functionality), Compatible with USB4, Thunderbolt 3, and Thunderbolt 4
- Transfer speed: The device uses the JHL6340 controller, delivering speeds around 22Gbps, compatible with both Win10 and Win11—offering better stability. Perfect for graphics work, video editing, AI art, and AAA gaming
- Flexible 4 power input options (choose one): CPU (4+4-pin), Molex, PD 3.0 (12V Max 60W), or DC5521 (12V Max 120W)
- Packing Includes: PCIE 3.0 x16 eGPU Dock withThunderbolt Port, High-quality Standard Thunderbolt 4 Cable (23.6 inch), a 24Pin Power Jumper Cable
Do not change a BIOS hot-plug setting based only on the menu listing. The PC model and firmware configuration matter, and the PCIe hot-plug explanation is only a reported possibility. Intel also notes that installing a PCI Express graphics controller can disable processor integrated graphics depending on BIOS features; that is a separate configuration issue, not an established explanation for the eject entry. Intel’s explanation of integrated graphics and PCI Express graphics controllers covers that distinction.
