Check an HDD’s SMART status and drive-specific attributes with a SMART-capable utility, then run a manufacturer diagnostic or self-test if appropriate. Back up important files first. SMART warnings, worsening sector-related readings, or a failed test are reasons to protect your data and consider replacing or warranty-servicing the drive—but a passing result cannot guarantee future reliability, and SMART cannot give an individual drive a dependable remaining-life countdown.

What an HDD health check can—and cannot—tell you

Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology (SMART) tracks selected drive attributes and can flag some developing problems. Seagate describes SMART errors as near-term warnings, but the system cannot predict every failure or provide a reliable calendar estimate for a particular HDD. A health report is evidence about conditions the drive can detect, not a promise that it will keep working.

A drive may appear to function normally despite a SMART alert, and Seagate notes that some diagnostic tests can still pass after a SMART error. Treat an alert as meaningful even when another check reports PASS. See Seagate’s guidance on a reported SMART error.

How to check an HDD’s health

  1. Identify the correct drive. Match the model and capacity, and note whether it is internal or connected through USB, a RAID controller, or another interface. Enclosures and controllers can limit SMART visibility; missing data does not by itself prove the disk lacks SMART support.
  2. Read its SMART report. Use a SMART-capable utility to inspect the overall-health assessment, available attributes, error log, and self-test log. The smartmontools project provides smartctl for reporting SMART data and running supported self-tests, as well as smartd for monitoring. Consult the smartctl documentation for its reporting and test options.
  3. Run a suitable diagnostic. For Seagate drives and compatible devices, SeaTools is available for Windows, Linux, and as a bootable diagnostic kit. Its checks include SMART checks, short drive self-tests, generic tests, and long tests. Other drive makers may offer their own diagnostic tools.
  4. Back up before extended tests or repair attempts. Seagate recommends backing up before its external-storage diagnostic procedure and before using SeaTools’ Fix All function. A diagnostic read is different from an operation that attempts repairs or writes to the disk; understand the operation before starting it. See Seagate’s backup guidance before running SeaTools and its SeaTools for Windows user guide.

Choosing between SMART checks and drive tests

These checks answer different questions: a SMART status review is a quick look at reported conditions, a short self-test checks selected functions, and an extended test examines more of the media. Seagate says its long generic test reads each sector and may take 3 to 5 hours per terabyte on high-capacity drives; actual duration depends on the drive model, interface, and condition.

Check What it tells you Practical limitation
SMART status and attributes Reported health assessment and drive-specific condition indicators. It covers only attributes the drive monitors; it is not a lifespan estimate.
Short self-test A relatively quick check of selected drive functions. It does not examine the media as comprehensively as an extended test.
Long generic test Reads each sector, according to Seagate’s SeaTools documentation. May take 3 to 5 hours per terabyte on high-capacity drives; actual time varies.

Seagate describes its SMART check and certain self-tests as data-safe, but warns that repair operations such as Fix All should be preceded by a backup and that recovery results can vary. SeaTools’ platform options and downloads are listed on Seagate’s SeaTools page. SMART visibility can still depend on the connection path.

How to interpret SMART attributes and test results

SMART reports can include normalized values, thresholds, raw values, and test results. Interpret them using documentation for the specific drive: manufacturers choose attributes and thresholds, and raw or normalized values do not have a universal meaning. The smartctl manual describes the values the utility reports; it does not calculate their meaning for every model.

Seagate Portable 5TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PS4, & Xbox - 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX5000400), Black
  • Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.
  • Failing overall-health status or a failed self-test: Treat either as a serious warning. Protect readable data and plan to replace or warranty-service the drive.
  • Reallocated sectors: The drive has substituted reserved sectors for sectors it could no longer use reliably. Watch the drive-specific readings and their trend rather than applying a universal cutoff.
  • Pending sectors: These are unstable sectors awaiting resolution. Their presence or worsening readings merit attention, but interpretation depends on the drive’s reporting and documentation.
  • SMART alert with a passing test: Do not dismiss the alert. Seagate says a drive can appear to work normally and some diagnostics may still pass after a SMART error; its SMART-error guidance explains this limitation.

Can you estimate an HDD’s remaining life?

Not reliably for an individual drive. SMART can identify some known warning conditions, but it monitors only selected measurable attributes, and different manufacturers can use different attributes and thresholds. A report cannot establish how many days, months, or years a particular HDD will last.

Backblaze’s SMART analysis reports correlations between SMART attributes and failures in its own data-center drive population, using SMART data collected with smartmontools. Population-level correlations can inform reliability analysis, but they are not a consumer-drive lifespan formula. That page does not establish a universal lifetime figure for HDDs.

What to do if the drive looks unhealthy

  • Copy important files first if the drive remains readable. If it is behaving erratically, avoid unnecessary writes and prioritize irreplaceable data.
  • Keep a separate backup. Another external HDD can be one backup destination, but a single copy alone is not a complete backup strategy.
  • Plan for replacement or warranty service after a failure. Seagate advises warranty exchange after a failed SMART check or short drive self-test; see its SMART-error support guidance.
  • Be cautious with critical data. If the drive makes unusual noises or has severe read errors, avoid repeated repair attempts. Consider whether professional recovery is worthwhile relative to the data’s value.
