Find the eye drop’s expiration date (often marked “EXP”) and lot, batch, or control number on the bottle and carton. Read the markings as printed, then compare the exact product and lot with official recall notices. Don’t try to derive an expiration date from a lot number; if a marking is unclear or package details conflict, ask a pharmacist.
Where to look on the package
First identify the product name and presentation, such as a multi-dose bottle or single-use vials. Then inspect both the immediate container and its outer carton. Look for “EXP” or “Expiration” near the date, and “LOT,” “Lot,” “Batch,” or “Control” near the lot identifier. The placement and format vary by product and package.
Federal labeling rules generally address expiration dating on both the immediate container and outer package, with exceptions that include certain individually cartoned single-dose containers. The lot number is a separate identifier intended to be capable of yielding the package’s complete manufacturing history; it is not a date. See 21 CFR 201.17 and 21 CFR 201.18.
How to check the lot number and expiration date
- Match the product. Record its name and presentation so you can compare a notice with the right item—not just a similar brand or product.
- Transcribe both markings. Copy the full lot identifier exactly, including letters and leading zeroes, and copy the expiration date exactly as printed. Keep the lot number and date separate.
- Check official recall notices. Search current FDA recall and safety notices for the product and compare every detail stated in the notice, including lot, expiration date, and package size when provided. A matching product name alone does not establish that your package is affected.
- Follow the package directions. Check the bottle or product insert for storage requirements and any instructions about how long to use the product after opening.
- Ask a pharmacist or clinician if something is unclear. Do this if the date or lot is unreadable, the bottle and carton disagree, the printed expiration has passed, or your lot matches a warning. Don’t guess from the code or rely on appearance to decide whether the drops are usable.
How to read the printed date
Use the date format shown on the package rather than assuming that every brand prints it the same way. An FDA review of labeling recommends a human-readable expiration date with a year, month, and non-zero day; it describes YYYY-MM-DD for numeric-only dates and YYYY-MMM-DD when letters name the month. It also notes that space-limited labeling may use year and month. This is general labeling guidance, not a decoder for a particular brand or a substitute for its instructions. See the FDA review materials for NDA 215092.

If only a year and month are printed, don’t invent a day or use a lot number to fill in missing information. If you cannot tell how the date applies to your product, ask a pharmacist.
Why the expiration date and storage instructions matter
The FDA explains that a drug’s expiration date marks the period it is known to retain strength, quality, and purity when stored according to its labeled conditions. The date therefore depends on following the product’s storage directions. It does not mean every opened bottle has the same usable life: the sources do not establish a universal discard interval after opening. Follow the specific bottle or insert, and ask a pharmacist if it gives no clear direction. Read the FDA’s expiration-date questions and answers.

Eye drops need particular care because they must be sterile to reduce infection risk and are used in a way that bypasses some of the body’s natural defenses. Don’t use a product whose safety is in question simply because the liquid looks normal. Review the FDA’s guidance on what to know about eye drops and consult a health professional when uncertain.

A recall notice may identify a specific lot rather than every package sold under a product name. For example, an FDA notice dated December 21, 2024, identified Systane product lot 10101 and an expiration date of 2025/09. That is a historical example, not a current status check; compare your exact product and lot against the latest notice. See the FDA notice for the one-lot Systane recall.

If your product appears in a current warning, follow the notice’s instructions and contact a pharmacist or clinician about what to do. A lot number helps identify a batch; it cannot be used by consumers to calculate a new expiration date. FDA describes expiration extensions as processes supported by manufacturer data or authorized by the agency, not as a calculation from the printed lot code.
