To check an EV battery warranty, find the warranty booklet for the car’s exact model year, battery version and original sales market, then verify the remaining coverage with the manufacturer or an authorized dealer using the VIN. Look for the warranty’s capacity threshold, time and mileage limits, approved test method, transfer rules, exclusions and remedy. There is no universal degradation percentage: 70% appears in several warranties, but it is not a global guarantee.

What EV battery degradation warranties cover

A battery-capacity warranty is generally a threshold-based promise, not a guarantee that the battery will retain 100% of its original capacity. Capacity can decline with time and use; the warranty defines when that loss becomes excessive, during what coverage period it qualifies, and what remedy the manufacturer may provide. Ford, for example, describes gradual capacity loss as normal wear and tear while covering excessive loss under its stated conditions. Ford’s US warranty information

Do not treat a covered capacity percentage as a promised driving range. Warranty terms address battery capacity or energy content; real-world range also depends on conditions and vehicle use. A dashboard range estimate, one state-of-charge reading or an unaffiliated app reading does not by itself establish warranty-grade state of health or prove eligibility.

Why there is no single degradation percentage

Thresholds and coverage periods vary by vehicle, model year, market and contract. These official examples illustrate the differences; they are not interchangeable rules. Check the booklet that applies to the exact car.

Example and scope Published capacity provision Time and distance limit
Ford, US owner-manual terms Below 70% of beginning-of-life capacity is considered excessive when an authorized EV Certified Ford Dealer determines capacity is below that level; Ford controls the measurement method. 8 years or 99,000 miles (160,000 km), whichever comes first.
GMC, US, 2026 booklet Battery deterioration below 70% is covered under the stated conditions. 8 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first.
Tesla, US model listings At least 70% retention is stated for the listed models. Varies by model and trim; consult the specific listing.
Renault, UK terms for vehicles registered from January 1, 2023 70% minimum capacity in the cited terms. 8 years/100,000 miles for several named models; 5 years/62,000 miles for certain 33 kWh Kangoo and Master batteries. Renault’s terms leave repair or replacement to its discretion.
California regulatory discussion The cited CARB appendix discusses 70% state of health for model years 2026–2030 and 75% for model years 2031 onward. 8 years or 100,000 miles in the discussed rule; this is a California-specific regulatory example, not a global warranty term.
Hyundai, US warranty summary The summary describes degradation coverage; the detailed threshold and conditions must be checked in the applicable warranty and owner’s manual. 10 years or 100,000 miles in the summary.

How to check your EV battery warranty

  1. Identify the exact vehicle. Record its make, model, model year, trim and battery variant, original country of sale, registration or in-service date, odometer reading and VIN. Imported vehicles may have different terms from locally sold versions.
  2. Get the applicable warranty booklet. Use the manufacturer’s owner portal or the booklet supplied with the car. Search for terms such as “high-voltage battery,” “traction battery,” “battery energy content” or “capacity loss.” A general warranty webpage may summarize coverage without providing the full test standard or conditions.
  3. Find the threshold and expiry rules. Note the stated capacity or state-of-health trigger, warranty start date, time limit and mileage limit. Where the contract says “whichever comes first,” reaching either limit ends that coverage period. Meeting the capacity trigger alone is not enough if the vehicle is outside the coverage window.
  4. Ask how an accepted capacity test works. Contact the manufacturer or an authorized dealer and ask which diagnostic procedure determines eligibility, who must perform it, and whether an appointment or preparation is required. Ford’s US terms specify an authorized EV Certified Ford Dealer and reserve the measurement method to Ford. Volkswagen Singapore’s cited terms call for measurement by a manufacturer-authorized repairer. Volkswagen Singapore warranty information
  5. Verify the VIN-specific status. Ask the manufacturer or authorized dealer to confirm the warranty start date, remaining time and mileage, applicable market terms, transfer status and any claim requirements in writing. This is especially important for a used EV.
  6. Read exclusions and remedy language. Check the clauses on charging, storage, modifications, servicing, maintenance, abuse or neglect. Ask what happens if a claim qualifies: repair, module work, a replacement pack or another contract-defined remedy. The contract controls; a qualifying claim does not automatically mean a new battery pack.
  7. Keep relevant records. Save the warranty booklet, service history, diagnostic reports and written dealer responses. Keep charging or maintenance records where the contract makes them relevant; having records does not by itself guarantee coverage.

What to check when buying a used EV

Do not rely on a seller’s general statement that the battery has a warranty. Have the manufacturer or authorized dealer confirm the remaining coverage against the VIN, including the start date, mileage, original market and transfer conditions. Transfer rules can include additional steps: Tata’s India terms, for example, require subsequent owners to notify the company for certain lifetime high-voltage battery coverage. Why the authorized test matters

Warranty eligibility depends on the measurement method specified by the applicable contract, not simply on an estimated range or an app’s reading. Ford’s US terms make the distinction explicit: capacity must be determined by an authorized EV Certified Ford Dealer, and Ford controls the method. Volkswagen Singapore also specifies an authorized repairer for its battery energy-content measurement. Ask the provider to explain the result and how it maps to the vehicle’s exact warranty threshold.

Regional and model-year qualifications

The examples above are limited to their named markets and documents. California’s cited regulatory discussion applies to the specified model years and rule context; it should not be presented as a worldwide entitlement. Manufacturer pages and booklets can change, so the live terms for the car’s model year, original market and VIN take precedence over a general summary or another vehicle’s warranty.
