If your AirPods Pro feel loose, sound thin, or cancel less noise than expected, check their fit and seal first. Reposition each earbud, run the fit test for your model, and try another included tip size if needed. Standard AirPods do not use removable silicone tips, so the tip-size test applies only to AirPods Pro.
What a good AirPods Pro fit should feel and sound like
Each AirPod Pro should feel secure without excessive pressure. A proper seal can improve bass and noise cancellation; Apple says, “When the fit is right, you experience better noise cancellation and music has a rich bass sound.” That guidance describes the benefit of a good seal, not a guarantee that every listener will prefer the resulting sound.
Start with the medium tips attached, then gently adjust the angle and position. Try the earbuds during ordinary movement. If one feels loose or comes out, try a larger tip; if it feels compressed or uncomfortable, try a smaller one. Your ears may need different sizes.

The test name depends on your AirPods Pro generation: AirPods Pro 1 and 2 use Ear Tip Fit Test; AirPods Pro 3 uses Acoustic Seal Test. Apple’s fit instructions cover the test and tip choice.

For AirPods Pro 3, the tip size that gives the best acoustic seal may differ from the size that makes the best contact for the heart-rate sensor. Do not assume one size necessarily optimizes both.

Improve sound and noise cancellation when the fit test is not enough
Reseat the earbuds and check for debris
Make sure each AirPod is seated securely and that the tips and earbuds are clean. Debris can interfere with the seal. Apple recommends cleaning if you notice less bass or more background sound while Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) is on. Keep the external microphones clear as well.
Check listening mode and software
Confirm that the listening mode you want is active. When diagnosing unexpected ANC behavior, Apple specifically advises checking that Adaptive Audio is not enabled. Also make sure the connected device software and AirPods firmware are current. Apple’s ANC troubleshooting guide gives additional checks.

Adjust the sound to your preferences
Personalization can change how audio sounds, but it cannot fix a poor physical seal. Apple documents Headphone Accommodations under Accessibility settings. Its article dated September 24, 2026, says a three-band equalizer is available for AirPods 4 or later, AirPods Pro 2 or later, and AirPods Max 2, subject to supported software.
