Inspect the page’s og:image (and Twitter/X Card image tags), confirm that the image URL loads for crawlers, and view the checker’s simulated card. Then use the destination network’s own debugger—such as Facebook Sharing Debugger or LinkedIn Post Inspector—to verify its cached result and request a fresh scrape when available.
What a “website thumbnail” actually is
The image shown beside a shared link usually comes from metadata in the page’s HTML, not from a screenshot generated by the social network. Open Graph tags commonly control it:

<meta property="og:url" content="https://example.com/page">Some services also read Twitter/X Card metadata, such as twitter:card and twitter:image. A checker fetches your URL, parses these tags, tests the image address and draws a preview. That preview is useful, but it may be a mock rather than the card currently stored in a platform cache.
How to check a thumbnail online
- Publish the page and make its URL publicly reachable. A crawler must be able to fetch the page without a login, local-network access or an interstitial blocking screen.
- Open a URL-based checker. Services such as OpenGraph Check, OGForge, PageGlass and OpenGraph.dev accept a page URL and report its parsed tags.
- Paste the canonical URL and run the check. Use the exact HTTPS address you intend to share, including the path. Check both the final URL and any redirect destination.
- Read the metadata report. Confirm that
og:imagepoints to the intended asset, that title and description match the page, and that the reported URL is not an old image. - Open or download the reported image URL. A valid tag is not enough: the image must return successfully to an unauthenticated crawler. Check for 404 responses, access rules, expiring signatures, hotlink protection and redirects.
- Inspect the simulated card. Compare the crop, text and contrast at phone-sized and desktop-sized views. A checker’s rendering is a first-pass mock, not proof of what every network currently serves.
- Verify on the destination platform. Use Facebook’s Sharing Debugger or LinkedIn’s Post Inspector when those tools are available. They show the platform’s fetch and can provide a scrape or refresh action. Platform tools and labels can change, so follow the current interface.
What to compare in an online checker

There is no independent test establishing one checker as objectively best. Choose the tool that fetches your URL, exposes the underlying fields and clearly labels simulation versus a platform scrape.

How to diagnose a wrong or missing thumbnail
The wrong image appears
- Check the fetched
og:image, not only your CMS media picker. Templates, plugins or duplicate tags may put another image later in the HTML. - Inspect redirects and canonical URLs. The platform may fetch a different URL than the one you edited.
- Remove stale image URLs from conflicting Open Graph or Twitter/X tags, then publish the page again.
- Run the destination platform’s debugger after the change. A platform may continue showing a previously cached card until it scrapes again.
No image is shown
- Add an absolute HTTPS
og:imageURL. Relative paths and URLs requiring authentication commonly fail for crawlers. - Request the image directly with a normal browser and with a crawler-like request. Fix 403, 404, TLS, redirect-loop and hotlink-protection errors.
- Check that your robots, firewall or CDN rules do not block the platform’s fetcher.
- Ensure the response is an actual image with a correct content type, not an HTML error page.
The card is cropped badly
Design the important subject and text away from the edges because each network can crop differently. OpenGraph.dev gives 1200×630 pixels as broadly safe vendor guidance, not a universal requirement or guarantee of identical rendering. Keep the file legible at small sizes and avoid placing essential information where a square or narrow crop can remove it.
The checker and social network disagree
This usually means cache timing or a difference between the checker’s mock renderer and the platform’s stored scrape. Recheck the exact shared URL in the platform debugger, trigger a refresh if offered, and allow for the platform to recrawl before testing again. Also confirm that redirects, localization, user-agent rules or cookies do not deliver different HTML.
Inspect the source yourself
A checker is faster, but viewing source confirms what your server sends. In a desktop browser, open the page, choose View Page Source (not only the live DOM inspector), then search for og:image, twitter:image, og:title and og:description. The source should contain one intentional value for each key. If JavaScript inserts tags after load, test with a URL fetcher as well: many social crawlers do not execute your application exactly as a browser does.

Reliability and performance checks
- Use a stable, publicly cacheable image URL rather than a session-bound or expiring link.
- Serve the asset over HTTPS with a valid certificate and a quick response.
- Keep the page’s initial response available without interaction, consent acceptance or login.
- After changing an image, use a new filename or query strategy only when the destination platform’s rules allow it; otherwise the old URL can remain cached.
- Test the final URL from more than one network if your site uses geo-routing, a firewall or a CDN.
