Before paying for a used Samsung Galaxy, verify the exact model, check its IMEI through the appropriate local service, confirm it will work on your carrier, and have the seller remove their accounts and demonstrate setup. Then inspect the hardware and agree on the sale terms. No single lookup, reset, or Knox screen proves that a phone is free of every ownership, network, payment, or physical-condition problem.
1. Confirm the exact Galaxy model and variant
On the phone, open Settings > About phone. Record the model number and compare it with the listing, the stated storage capacity, and any invoice or box the seller supplies. A box or invoice is supporting evidence, not a substitute for checking the device itself.
Use the exact model and regional variant when checking compatibility. Samsung notes that device compatibility and supported features can vary by region and operating system; a Galaxy model name alone does not establish that a particular version will work with your local carrier. Find the IMEI in Settings > About phone, then dial *#06# and compare the number displayed. If the numbers differ, pause the sale and ask the seller to explain the mismatch with documentation. Samsung describes where to find the IMEI and advises contacting the carrier or seller if the phone is reported as blacklisted: Samsung’s blacklisted-phone guidance.

Check the IMEI using the service relevant to the phone’s destination country and intended network. For example, India’s government CEIR portal provides a pre-purchase device-validity check and also describes retrieving the IMEI with *#06#: CEIR’s IMEI verification service. That service is country-specific, not a universal international blacklist database.
A clear result is useful but limited: it reflects the service’s status at the time of the check and does not guarantee that the phone will not be reported later. Nor does a blacklist check establish carrier-unlock status or rule out a separate finance or management restriction.

3. Confirm it will work on your carrier
Ask which country and carrier originally sold the phone, and whether it is carrier-unlocked. If possible, test it with a SIM or eSIM from the network you plan to use. If that is not practical, contact that carrier with the IMEI and ask it to verify compatibility and unlock status. Carrier policies differ, and there is no single global unlock checker established here; a check for one country or network should not be treated as a worldwide answer.
4. Have the seller remove accounts and demonstrate setup
Ask the seller to remove their Google account before resetting the phone. Then have them factory-reset it and proceed through the initial setup while you are present. Samsung explains that Factory Reset Protection can request the previously used Google account after a reset performed with buttons, and advises removing the account before transferring a reset device. If setup asks for credentials the seller cannot provide, do not pay. A successful setup is a meaningful check, but it does not by itself clear every possible enterprise-management or payment-related restriction.
5. Treat Knox information as one specific signal
To view the Knox version, open Settings > About phone > Software information. Samsung says this identifies whether the device is secured by Knox; it does not verify ownership, IMEI status, carrier unlocking, or the absence of administrator or payment controls. Knox Guard documentation describes administrator actions that can include locking a device and payment-related actions, but it does not offer a public consumer lookup procedure. If the phone displays a management or payment notice, ask the seller to have the responsible organization or provider clear it before purchase. See Knox Guard’s device-details documentation.
6. Inspect the screen, body, and everyday functions
These are practical buyer checks, not a Samsung-certified diagnostic sequence. Inspect the phone under bright light and test the functions you will rely on:

- Display and touch: Show plain white and gray screens to spot cracks, dead pixels, uneven color, or burn-in. Touch across the full panel, including its edges.
- Exterior: Look for bent edges, frame gaps, corrosion, and signs of impact.
- Controls and audio: Test the physical buttons, speakers, microphone, vibration, cameras, and flash.
- Connections: Connect a charging cable, then test Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and cellular service with your intended network if possible.
A third-party 2026 checklist also flags screen burn-in and device-risk checks, but it is commercial secondary material rather than an official Samsung diagnostic standard: IMEICHECK’s used Galaxy checklist.
7. Ask about battery, repairs, and the terms of sale
Use the phone briefly and ask whether its battery has been replaced, whether it has been repaired or exposed to water, and whether the seller has proof of purchase. Ask what return period and warranty, if any, apply, and get important terms in writing.
A short hands-on check cannot certify battery capacity or water resistance. There is no universal Samsung battery-health percentage or authoritative in-person pre-purchase battery test established across Galaxy models, so do not treat an informal check as a definitive measurement.
8. Keep a record and compare the whole deal
Keep the listing, seller conversation, receipt, and exact IMEI with your purchase records; do not post the IMEI publicly. Prefer a traceable payment and a return option when available, while recognizing that neither guarantees recovery if something goes wrong.
