You can screen a used Samsung Gear S3 for clues of water damage, but a visual inspection and ordinary function checks cannot confirm that its seals are intact or rule out hidden liquid ingress. Inspect its history and condition, test it while dry, and—if water resistance is important—ask a Samsung-authorized service center whether it can assess that specific watch.
What the Gear S3’s IP68 rating does—and does not—tell you
Samsung describes the Gear S3 as IP68, with protection under specified conditions for immersion in fresh water up to 1.5 metres for no more than 30 minutes. Those figures describe a controlled test classification, not a guarantee about the condition of a particular second-hand watch. Samsung Singapore’s Gear S3 guidance and a Samsung Global Newsroom product explanation also caution against moving or strong water.

Age, damage, opening, or repair can change the condition of an individual unit. Samsung warns that a drop or impact may damage water- and dust-resistance features, and its broader support guidance says water resistance is not permanent. Do not infer that a used Gear S3 is safe to swim or shower in just because it originally carried an IP68 rating.

1. Ask about its history
Ask the seller whether the watch has been submerged or exposed to pool or salt water, dropped or struck, opened, or repaired. A clear history can help you judge risk, but the seller’s answer is not proof that the seals remain sound. Impact is a specific concern in Samsung’s guidance.

2. Look closely at the case
In good light, check the glass and case for cracks, chips, dents, distortion, visible gaps, loose parts, or signs that the watch has been opened. Treat these as reasons for caution rather than definitive evidence of water ingress: this visual check is only buyer screening, and the exterior cannot establish the condition of the seals.
3. Test ordinary functions while the watch is dry
With the seller’s permission, check that the watch powers on and charges, the display has no unusual spots or fogging, the touchscreen responds, the rotating bezel registers input, and both side buttons work. If practical, pair it and test the speaker and microphone. Samsung notes that wetness can affect sound from the speaker or microphone and can interfere with touch or other functions. These symptoms may have causes unrelated to water, and normal operation does not rule out hidden damage.
If you need the Gear S3’s compatible charging dock for an in-person check, Samsung identifies model EP-YO760 as a Gear S3 charging dock and lists the watch among Qi wireless-charging devices. Samsung’s charging guidance can help identify compatible equipment. Successful charging only confirms that charging works; it does not detect water damage or prove water resistance.
4. Do not wet the watch to test it
Do not dunk, rinse, or deliberately wet a used Gear S3 as a buying test. A successful casual water test cannot establish how durable its seal is, and a failed test could damage the watch.
5. Seek a service-center check if water resistance matters
Ask a Samsung-authorized service center whether it currently handles Gear S3 watches and can inspect or test the particular unit before purchase. Samsung recommends regular checks at an authorized service center, but that does not establish that every location still services this older model or offers a water-resistance test. Confirm availability locally; without a credible recent test, do not treat the watch as currently water-resistant.

Use the same screening standard for each unit. Compare documented impact, repair, and liquid history; visible case condition; results of the same basic dry-function checks; and whether either watch has a credible recent service-center water-resistance check. These observations help you assess warning signs, but they are not substitutes for a seal test.
