To judge a phone’s likely battery life, compare results from the same independent test method and focus on workloads that match how you use it. A manufacturer’s “up to” hours describe a particular test—not a promise of how long your phone will last each day. Battery capacity in mAh is useful context, but it cannot predict runtime on its own.
Start by finding out what the hours measure
Battery-life figures are meaningful only when you know the workload behind them. Local video playback, streamed video, web browsing, gaming, talk time, and mixed-use estimates put different demands on a phone. A local video loop, for example, may not use the data connection and radio activity involved in streaming.
Apple distinguishes local from streamed video in its test notes and describes details such as the network and media loop. Samsung’s published procedure separately measures talk, audio, video, and internet use. Look for the exact test label rather than treating every figure called “battery life” as the same measure.
Compare phones tested the same way
The fairest comparison is usually a side-by-side test from one source using the same settings and procedure across candidate phones. Avoid ranking a manufacturer’s video-playback claim against a reviewer’s web-browsing result as if the hours were directly comparable.

Independent outlets also use different methods. PhoneArena reports in-house web-browsing, video-streaming, and 3D-gaming tests; its streaming test uses the same video playlist and settings, while its gaming test uses a real game under tuned settings. Android Authority describes automated tests covering web browsing, video playback, camera capture, video recording, video calls, and graphics-benchmark data. It drains 7% of the battery during each workload and extrapolates the maximum task runtime. Those results can help compare phones within the same methodology, but they are not interchangeable with another outlet’s tests or a manufacturer’s claims.
Choose tests that resemble your routine
A phone that lasts a long time in one continuous task may behave differently during your own mix of use. Use task-specific results for the activities that matter most to you:

- Streaming over cellular: Look for streamed-video results, not just local playback.
- Photos and video: Check camera-capture and video-recording workloads if you use them frequently.
- Demanding games: Give gaming tests more weight than video-playback results.
- Video calls: Look for a video-call workload if calls are a regular part of your day.
- Mostly idle use: Continuous screen-on tests may not capture standby drain, so seek a transparent mixed-use test as well.
Mixed-use tests are useful when they explain the activity profile they represent. Apple describes a representative-use profile combining passive and active periods across messaging, photos, music, social media, video, games, web browsing, and navigation. That profile is still a defined test—not a forecast of every person’s day.

Read the test conditions and limitations
Brightness, Wi-Fi or cellular use, signal strength, temperature, software, settings, and battery age can all affect runtime. Before relying on a result, check what the source says about its setup and whether the tested phone was production-ready.

Apple’s test notes, for example, specify network subscriptions, repeated media duration, software and device generation, and settings exceptions. Samsung says its procedure is conducted in a lab using a simulated network and development-stage prototypes and software; its support guidance also notes that settings and use affect battery lifetime. PhoneArena identifies signal strength, temperature, and battery aging as variables in real-world use. A new-phone lab result is not a guarantee for an older used handset or a phone used on a weak-signal commute.

mAh describes a battery’s charge capacity, not how many hours the complete phone will last. Components and workloads affect how quickly that capacity is used. Compare capacity alongside measured runtimes for relevant tasks rather than trying to convert mAh directly into hours.

For example, PhoneArena’s OnePlus 13 result record, dated January 7, 2025, lists 6,000 mAh alongside 7 hours 30 minutes of web browsing, 21 hours 34 minutes of video, and 9 hours 12 minutes of gaming. These are separate results from that source’s tests, not a prediction of a buyer’s daily runtime or a recommendation to buy that model. See the PhoneArena OnePlus 13 results.
Where applicable, a standardized label can offer another comparison point. The cited EU regulation defines battery endurance in hours as execution time for a specified test sequence. Check the current label and whether the rules apply in your market before relying on a particular label field. Read the EU smartphone energy-labelling regulation.

A practical checklist for comparing two phones
- Write down your main workloads. Decide whether browsing, cellular video streaming, gaming, camera use, calls, or mixed use best represents your day.
- Find results for both phones under one method. Prefer a source that tests the candidates under the same procedure; record the test type and runtime for each.
- Check whether the setup is comparable to yours. Note brightness, network, signal, software, temperature, and whether the devices were new or preproduction.
- Use capacity as context. Note mAh, but do not use it to infer hours without relevant runtime testing.
- Flag method differences. If you must compare results from different sources or a manufacturer claim and an independent test, identify the differences instead of treating the raw hours as a direct ranking.
