No single benchmark score predicts how every app will feel, so give the most weight to tests that resemble what you actually do.
Start with the tasks you care about
“Performance” is not one measurement. A phone can score well in a short CPU test yet behave differently during a long gaming session, while a general productivity score may say little about the specific apps you use. Decide which evidence matters most before comparing models.
- Gaming: Focus on graphics results and repeated or sustained graphics testing, not just one short run.
- Editing or multitasking: Look for CPU results and workload tests that include editing, documents, or data tasks.
- General use: Prefer tests that cover activities such as browsing and common productivity tasks, plus reviewers’ timed real-world tasks.
These categories help you choose relevant evidence; they do not guarantee how a particular phone will perform in every app.
Compare phones tested on equal terms
Before comparing scores, check the benchmark version and test conditions. UL Benchmarks advises: “In general, you should benchmark every device you test under the same conditions.” See UL’s mobile-device performance benchmarking guidance.

- Confirm that the same benchmark version was used for both phones.
- Check whether the review describes similar test settings and conditions.
- Note whether the phone was cool or already warm. UL advises allowing a device to cool around benchmark runs because temperature can affect results.
- Look for repeat runs or stress tests as well as a short benchmark result.
If a review does not explain its setup, treat its score as limited context rather than a clean head-to-head comparison. A high score from one test does not by itself establish that a phone is the better buy.
Read the workload behind the score
An overall number is easier to interpret when you know what the test actually does. UL’s PCMark for Android Work 3.0 benchmark includes web browsing, video editing, document and data tasks, and photo editing. Its Work 3.0 overview describes the workload; UL also presents PCMark for Android as a benchmark for smartphones and tablets.

Match those activities to your habits. If you rarely edit video, a video-related result may be less useful to you than browsing or document work. If your main use is a demanding game, a general productivity score is not a substitute for graphics testing.
Check CPU, graphics, and sustained performance separately
Reviews may report CPU results such as single-core and multicore measurements, graphics benchmark scores, and stress-test behavior. Treat these as distinct views of the phone rather than interchangeable versions of one score.

- CPU: Compare single-core and multicore results when both are reported, using the same test and version across phones.
- Graphics: Check graphics results for gaming or other visually demanding work.
- Sustained load: Repeated graphics tests can show whether performance changes during prolonged use. Read the review’s cooling and test-condition notes before drawing conclusions.
For examples of review methods, Android Authority’s testing methodology describes CPU, productivity, graphics stress, and battery testing. Tom’s Guide’s smartphone testing approach includes Geekbench and 3DMark alongside a timed video-transcoding task. These methods provide different kinds of evidence; use the tasks that best resemble your own use.

Battery runtime is a test result, not a universal property independent of how it was measured. Workload, network, screen brightness, and the test’s stopping rule all affect what an “hours” figure means.

For example, UL’s mobile battery testing guidance describes a test that loops until charge drops below 20% and may take several hours. Tom’s Guide describes web surfing over 5G, or 4G where needed, at 150 nits. Those are different protocols: do not rank their reported hours as though they came from the same test.
When comparing two phones’ battery figures, check that the workload, network, brightness, and stopping rule are sufficiently similar. If the review does not give those details, the number is harder to compare directly.
