Check what the test measured, how it was run, and whether its settings resemble the way you will use the laptop.
Start with the runtime claim—and find its test conditions
A manufacturer’s advertised battery life is an outcome under particular conditions, not a guarantee for every owner. Lenovo advises checking the workload, device configuration, settings, and usage conditions behind a runtime claim: How to Evaluate Laptop Battery Life.
Look for the method behind the number. If the manufacturer does not explain the workload or settings, treat the claim as a best-case reference rather than a direct forecast of your day. A number without its test conditions is difficult to compare fairly with another laptop’s result.
Find independent results for the exact configuration
Search for reviews that identify the tested model and configuration, then check whether their testing method is disclosed and applied consistently across laptops. A product family can include different processors, screens, and other hardware; a result for one configuration may not describe another.

Prefer coverage that reports more than one workload when available. A single headline figure can conceal meaningful differences between browsing, streaming, local video playback, and other use. RTINGS describes its battery testing approach here: Our Laptop Performance Tests: Battery.
Match the workload to your own day
Battery runtime varies by task. Web browsing and document work, online video streaming, locally stored video playback, gaming, and idle are distinct scenarios—not interchangeable measures of “real” battery life. Choose the result that most closely resembles your intended use, and use other workload results to understand how performance may differ across tasks.

Microsoft’s battery-life measurement guidance treats web browsing, streaming, local playback, and idle as separate screen-on scenarios, and recommends internet access for most scenarios to better resemble typical connected use: Device under test setup for battery-life measurements.
Local video playback is not streaming
Microsoft Learn says, “As part of the Battery Run Down job, the Local Video Playback assessment measures the usage rate of a computer’s battery during full-screen local video playback.” That describes a specific assessment, not a prediction of browsing, streaming, or a mixed workday. Even the playback app or site can affect results, as RTINGS notes in its battery test methodology.

Check whether test conditions are comparable
Two results are more useful side by side when their setups are alike. Before comparing numbers, inspect the test conditions for:
- Screen brightness: A brighter display can change power use, so note the level or method used to set it.
- Power settings: Check the selected power mode or profile.
- Connectivity: Note whether Wi-Fi or other radios were enabled and whether the test used an internet connection.
- Background activity: Look for information about other apps or system activity during the run.
- Workload and playback method: Identify the apps, websites, files, or benchmark scenario used.
When a reviewer uses the same disclosed method across candidates, the results are easier to compare. Differences in setup can make an apparent gap reflect the test conditions as well as the laptops.

Use battery capacity as context, not a runtime calculation
Battery capacity is commonly stated in watt-hours (Wh). It is useful context when comparing devices, but it does not translate directly into hours of use: processor activity, screen settings, software, and usage patterns also affect energy consumption. Lenovo discusses these factors in its guide to evaluating laptop battery life.
Use Wh alongside workload-matched runtime tests, not instead of them. A larger capacity alone does not establish that one laptop will last longer in your particular routine.

A practical checklist before you decide
- Identify the exact configuration. Match the processor and display options in the review to the laptop you plan to buy.
- Choose a representative workload. For example, prioritize browsing or office-work results for a connected study day, streaming results for online video, or local playback results only if you primarily watch downloaded video.
- Read the test method. Record brightness, power profile, connectivity, background activity, and the apps or playback method where disclosed.
- Compare like with like. Give more weight to results measured with the same method than to figures from different scenarios or undisclosed setups.
- Use capacity as a supporting detail. Note the battery’s Wh rating, but base your expectation on relevant runtime tests rather than capacity alone.
Some benchmark profiles combine several workload types instead of reporting one headline runtime. For example, PCMark 10’s Battery Life Profile includes modern office, applications, video, gaming, and idle; see the PCMark 10 technical guide. Check which profile result you are reading before treating it as a match for your own routine.
