To check one flight, use the operating airline’s flight-status page or app and search by flight number and date. For broader context, check the FAA’s airport status for both the departure and arrival airports, then confirm any possible effect on the specific flight with the airline. “Real time” means the information can change as operations change; it does not guarantee that every update or notification reaches you instantly.
How to check a specific flight
- Open the operating airline’s flight-status lookup. Enter the flight number and date if requested. The airline is the primary source here for the status of an individual flight. The FAA also advises passengers to check with the airline for up-to-date information about a specific flight: FAA: Preparing to Fly.
- Check the departure and arrival airports. Use the FAA’s National Airspace System airport status page to see general airport conditions and delay programs that could affect traffic at either end of the route.
- Compare the airport information with the airline’s flight-specific status. Airport delays provide context, not confirmation that your flight is delayed. Recheck the airline’s lookup as departure approaches, and before leaving for the airport or while traveling, since conditions can change. The FAA’s pages do not specify a guaranteed refresh interval.
What each status source can tell you

The FAA’s distinction matters when an airport is reporting delays: that information does not establish whether a particular flight is affected. What to do if a flight is delayed or canceled
If a delay is possible
Keep checking the airline’s flight-status lookup for the specific flight. Use FAA airport conditions to understand wider disruption at the origin or destination, not as a substitute for the airline’s status.
If the flight is canceled
Contact the airline for the reason and for rebooking options. The FAA Air Traffic Control System Command Center says: “The FAA/Air Traffic Control does not cancel flights. You will need to contact your airline to determine why they canceled your flight.” Its FAQ also directs passengers to the airline for cancellation information.

How to track someone’s arrival
Ask for the flight number and travel date, then look up that flight on the operating airline’s status page or app. Check the arrival airport’s FAA status for general delay context, but rely on the airline for the flight’s own status. Because updates and alerts are not guaranteed to arrive instantly, check again as the scheduled arrival approaches rather than treating an earlier result as final.
Geographic scope
This workflow uses FAA tools for U.S. airport conditions and delay information. The FAA sources cited here do not establish an equivalent airport-status service for other countries, so for travel elsewhere, use the operating airline for the individual flight and consult the relevant airport or aviation authority for local conditions.
