You can charge a Tesla at home without installing a Wall Connector: a Mobile Connector may work with a compatible household outlet, while a dedicated Wall Connector can charge faster. The right choice depends on your outlet and electrical panel, how much range you need overnight, and the installation quote. Electricity cost depends on the rate charged when you plug in.
Choose the home charging equipment that fits your setup
Tesla lists three home charging options. The prices below are Tesla-listed U.S. purchase prices shown on its home charging page when researched; check the current checkout price and availability for your location. Installation is separate.
| Equipment | Tesla-listed price | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile Connector | $300 | Portable charging from compatible outlets using the appropriate adapter. |
| Wall Connector | $585 | A dedicated home charger for Tesla vehicles, with higher potential charging speed and Wi-Fi features. |
| Universal Wall Connector | $660 | A wall-mounted option with NACS and J1772 compatibility for Tesla and other EVs. |

Mobile Connector: use a suitable outlet you already have
Tesla says the Mobile Connector can plug into a standard 120-volt household outlet with its NEMA 5-15 adapter, or into a suitable existing 240-volt outlet with the corresponding adapter. Have an electrician or qualified installer confirm that an existing outlet is appropriate for EV charging; do not assume that any outlet or circuit is suitable.
On 120 V, Tesla estimates approximately 2–3 miles of range per charging hour overall. Its model-specific table lists 6 miles per hour for Model 3, 5 for Model S, 4 for Model X, and 5 for Model Y. With a 240 V NEMA 14-50 outlet, Tesla lists 30, 27, 23, and 27 miles per hour for those models respectively. These are Tesla’s approximate rates, and actual charging depends on vehicle and electrical setup. Details: Tesla Mobile Connector support.

Wall Connector: prioritize faster, dedicated charging
Tesla specifies a maximum output of 11.5 kW / 48 A and up to 44 miles of range per hour for some Tesla vehicles. That top rate is not universal: the vehicle’s charging capability and the circuit selected for installation affect speed. For example, Tesla’s table lists 44 miles per hour for Model 3 and Model Y at a 60 A breaker and 48 A output, while certain trims are limited to 32 A and up to 30 miles per hour; Cybertruck Premium AWD is listed at 30 miles per hour in that configuration. Lower circuit ratings reduce charging speed. See Tesla Wall Connector specifications.
The Wall Connector supports Wi-Fi setup, scheduling, and charging data, according to Tesla. Its product page lists a 48-month residential warranty; check current product terms before purchase.
Do you need to install a Wall Connector?
No. Tesla says a Wall Connector is not required. A Mobile Connector may be sufficient if you have a suitable outlet and your overnight charging time meets your needs. The trade-off is speed: a standard 120 V outlet adds range slowly, while a compatible 240 V outlet can supply substantially more.

- Consider the Universal Wall Connector if compatibility with both NACS and J1772 vehicles matters in your household.
Compare outlet availability, daily driving, charging time, vehicle compatibility, desired speed, portability, and a site-specific installation quote rather than choosing based on a headline miles-per-hour figure alone.
What installation involves—and what it may cost
Tesla’s displayed U.S. estimated installation ranges are $0–$1,500 for Mobile Connector arrangements and $750–$1,500 for Wall Connector or Universal Wall Connector installation. Tesla notes that an existing outlet approved for charging may require no installation, while a new 240 V outlet may cost $750–$1,500. These are Tesla estimates, not a quote for a particular home or a national average; the final cost depends on the electrical system and project scope. See Tesla’s installation estimates.
What can change the quote
Tesla lists professional installation service and materials, electrical permit, inspection, and installation warranty as standard installation items. Additional work may be needed for a long wire run, another electrical panel, underground trenching, a main panel upgrade, a pedestal, or routing cables behind walls. Installation can take several hours depending on configuration.

Does your electrical panel need an upgrade?
Not necessarily. Tesla describes several power-management approaches: static management sets the charger to the panel capacity available for charging; dynamic management adjusts charging to household electrical use and requires a separately purchased Tesla-approved power meter; and group management lets up to six Gen 3 Wall Connectors share power. These options do not replace an assessment of your home’s panel and wiring. Have a qualified installer determine whether the existing system can support the proposed setup and whether an upgrade or power management is appropriate. For a useful estimate, use the vehicle’s energy consumption and your utility’s applicable rate. Be clear about whether the rate includes delivery charges, taxes, or fixed fees. Your bill may include charges beyond the per-kWh energy rate, and rates vary by utility and plan; there is no universal Tesla charging cost per month or per charge.
Check whether overnight charging is cheaper
Tesla recommends charging during low-cost overnight periods when the utility offers off-peak pricing. Its Rate Plan Charging feature can schedule charging using a home energy rate plan, but it requires specific equipment and software: Powerwall 2, Powerwall +, or Powerwall 3 with firmware 25.26 or later; Wall Connector 3 or Universal Wall Connector with firmware 25.18 or later; and Tesla app 4.49 or later. See Tesla Rate Plan Charging requirements.
If you do not have that setup, check your utility’s time-of-use options and use vehicle or charger scheduling where supported. A lower overnight rate helps only if your plan actually charges less during the hours you use.
Check local incentives
Tesla says incentives may include purchase or installation rebates, or discounted electricity rates, and directs customers to local administrators or utilities for current offers. Eligibility and value depend on location and can change, so verify the terms directly with your utility or program administrator before relying on a savings amount. Tesla’s guidance is on its Home Charging page.
