You can set your PlayStation status to Online, Busy, or Appear Offline from your profile or status menu on PS5, PS4, and the PlayStation App. To control who can see your online status and current game, adjust the separate privacy setting for your account.
Change your online status
Sony says Online is the default while you are signed in unless you choose another status. Busy is intended to signal that you are focusing on a game or stepping away. Appear Offline hides your displayed availability from friends and other players, but it does not make you invisible in every PlayStation context.
On PS5
- From the home screen, select your profile, then select Online Status.
- Choose Online, Busy, or Appear Offline. You can also open the Control Center and select your profile > Online Status.
Sony also documents changing status from the user-selection screen by pressing the Options button.
On PS4
- From the home screen, go to Profile > Set Online Status.
- Alternatively, press the PS button to open Quick Menu and select Online Status.
- Choose Online or Appear Offline.
Busy cannot be selected on PS4.
In the PlayStation App
- On the play screen, tap Profile.
- Select Online Status, then choose the status you want to display.
Control who sees your status and current game
Your availability choice and your account’s privacy controls do different jobs. Choosing Appear Offline changes the status displayed to others; the privacy setting determines who can see your online status and what you are currently playing.

- PS5: Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Privacy > View and Customise Your Privacy Settings. Review the activity controls, including Who can see your online status and what you’re currently playing.
- PS4: Open Settings > Account Management > Privacy Settings, then choose the relevant feature.
- Online: Open Account Management, go to Privacy settings, and edit the relevant feature.
Sony says account privacy settings apply across devices. Status changes made on PS5 or PS4 also carry across the covered consoles, and the selected status is retained the next time you sign in. PlayStation’s online status guide and privacy settings guide describe these controls.
What Appear Offline does—and does not do
Appear Offline reduces visible presence; it is not a promise of total invisibility. Sony notes that you might still appear online to other players within a game. Signing in on a PS3, PS Vita, or PlayStation TV results in appearing online. Other players can also send voice-chat and online-game invitations while you are Busy or Appear Offline.

Sony’s support guidance puts the invitation caveat plainly: “Even if your status is set to Busy or Appear Offline, other players can still invite you to voice chat and online games.” Read Sony’s full status guidance for the platform-specific details.

Hiding a game affects activity information for that game; it does not necessarily hide your overall online presence or current activity in the same way as an offline status.

- PS5: Games added to the hidden-games list do not display your activity in that game to other players.
- PS4: Hiding a game removes information from activities, your profile, or your trophy list. Other PS4 players can still see the game in Now Playing. Sony’s suggested way to prevent that is Profile > Set Online Status > Appear Offline.

A child account may not be able to change every privacy setting itself. A family manager, parent, or guardian can manage the child’s settings and choose which controls the child may change.
