You can change the network path your iPhone uses, adjust its local address on a Wi-Fi network, or route supported browsing through a privacy service—but these are different outcomes. iPhone settings do not let you choose an arbitrary public IP address. For websites to see traffic from a different route, switch networks or use a VPN; neither ordinary network switching nor a renewed DHCP lease guarantees a different public IP.

First, identify which address you want to change

An iPhone can be associated with several network identifiers. The right method depends on what you mean by “IP address.”

  • Local Wi-Fi IP: An address used to communicate within the Wi-Fi network, typically assigned by its router. Changing this affects the iPhone’s address on that network, not necessarily the address websites see.
  • Public-facing IP: The address associated with the internet connection through which traffic reaches websites. The router, internet provider, or cellular network controls that connection path; iPhone settings do not offer a universal way to select an arbitrary public IP.
  • Wi-Fi MAC address: A network identifier for the device, not an IP address. Private Wi-Fi Address changes the identifier presented to a Wi-Fi network; it does not itself change the public IP.
  • Privacy routing: A VPN or iCloud Private Relay can affect how supported traffic is routed or presented to websites. Neither is the same as manually changing the local Wi-Fi IP.

Seven ways to change the connection or address

The options below solve different problems. A change of connection can affect the public-facing route, while manual Wi-Fi settings and router-side DHCP affect local network assignment.

Method What it affects Scope and public-IP certainty Privacy and compatibility
Switch Wi-Fi networks Internet connection path; local address on the new network That Wi-Fi connection. A different public IP is possible, not guaranteed. Depends on the network. Captive portals or network access rules may apply.
Switch between Wi-Fi and cellular Access network and route to the internet Applies while using the selected connection. A different public-facing address is possible, not guaranteed. Apple provides separate Limit IP Address Tracking controls for Wi-Fi and cellular.
Use another network or Personal Hotspot Connection path; local address on the network being joined Applies to the connection in use. A public-IP change is not guaranteed. Hotspot availability and conditions depend on the network and carrier.
Use a VPN Traffic routed through the VPN service Traffic using the VPN. Websites may see the VPN route rather than the original connection; a provider-specific outcome is not established here. Requires a VPN service. Provider privacy, location, performance, terms, and compatibility vary and need separate verification.
Use iCloud Private Relay Privacy routing for supported browsing For eligible users and supported traffic, with settings managed per Wi-Fi or cellular network. It is not an arbitrary IP chooser. Some websites or networks may rely on IP-based controls, which can affect compatibility.
Change local Wi-Fi settings Local IP, DNS, or HTTP Proxy settings for a Wi-Fi network The selected Wi-Fi network. A local IP change does not establish that websites will see a different public IP. Incorrect settings can prevent connection or name resolution.
Change router-side DHCP settings or ask an administrator How the network assigns local device addresses The managed network. Renewing a lease does not guarantee a different public IP. Requires router or administrator access; changing assignment settings can affect network connectivity.

1. Join a different Wi-Fi network

Open Settings > Wi-Fi, then select an available network and connect. Each network has its own connection path and may assign the iPhone a different local address. Websites may see a different public-facing address, but Apple’s cited guidance does not guarantee that outcome for every network.

Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

2. Switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data

Turn Wi-Fi off to use cellular data, or connect to Wi-Fi to use that network instead. This changes the access network used for the connection, so the public-facing route may change. It does not promise a particular address. To manage Private Relay separately on each connection, use the network-specific Limit IP Address Tracking setting described below.

3. Connect through another network or a Personal Hotspot

Joining another Wi-Fi network or a nearby Personal Hotspot changes the connection path. On iPhone, Apple documents joining a Personal Hotspot from the Wi-Fi network list in Settings > Wi-Fi. A different path may mean a different public-facing address, but neither hotspot use nor a particular carrier allocation guarantees one.

4. Use a VPN when the goal is to change the route websites see

A VPN service routes traffic through its servers, so websites may see traffic associated with that route rather than the iPhone’s ordinary connection. Choose and configure a service based on its own current documentation; provider locations, privacy practices, performance, and terms are service-specific. Apple’s documentation about Private Relay describes Apple’s feature, not an endorsement or evaluation of third-party VPNs.

5. Use iCloud Private Relay if eligible

Private Relay is an Apple privacy feature for supported browsing, not a control for choosing a particular IP address. Availability depends on eligibility, and it does not necessarily cover every app or connection. Apple explains that Limit IP Address Tracking manages the feature for a particular Wi-Fi or cellular network. See Apple’s Private Relay support page for feature details.

6. Change local Wi-Fi settings

Connect to the Wi-Fi network first. Then open Settings > Wi-Fi and tap the information button next to the connected network. Apple documents network options there, including DNS and HTTP Proxy. Manual IP settings, where available, apply to that local Wi-Fi network; they do not let you choose the public IP websites see. Use values supplied by the network administrator, since incorrect entries can break connectivity. See Apple’s iPhone guide to Wi-Fi settings.

7. Ask the administrator about DHCP or router settings

For a local address problem on home, office, or managed Wi-Fi, ask the network administrator to review the router’s DHCP assignment. Apple explains that a DHCP lease is the period for which an assigned address is reserved. Renewing a lease or changing local assignment settings may affect the iPhone’s local address, but does not prove that its public IP changed. Apple recommends an 8-hour DHCP lease for home or office networks and a 1-hour lease for hotspot or guest networks; these are router recommendations, not promises about public addresses. See Apple’s DHCP lease guidance.

Private Wi-Fi Address is not an IP-address setting

Private Wi-Fi Address changes the Wi-Fi MAC address the iPhone presents to a network. Apple says iPhone uses a unique private network address on each Wi-Fi network. On iOS 18 and later, the setting offers Off, Fixed, and Rotating modes: Fixed does not rotate, while Rotating changes periodically. This feature is intended to reduce tracking across networks, not change the local or public IP address. Apple recommends leaving private addressing on for networks that support it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To check the setting, open Settings > Wi-Fi, tap the information button beside the network, and find Private Wi-Fi Address. The exact controls and labels can vary by iOS version and network. See Apple’s explanation of private Wi-Fi addresses and Apple’s guidance on using private Wi-Fi addresses.

Manage Limit IP Address Tracking by network

Limit IP Address Tracking controls iCloud Private Relay behavior for an individual Wi-Fi or cellular connection; it does not let you set a chosen IP. Apple notes that some websites, networks, and services use IP addresses for filtering, monitoring, rate limiting, auditing, or other network-based controls. If one of those services does not work, consider whether its administrator requires IP visibility. If you need to turn the feature off for compatibility, limit the change to the affected network where possible; doing so reduces the privacy protection Private Relay provides on that connection.

For Wi-Fi, open Settings > Wi-Fi, tap the information button beside the connected network, and review Limit IP Address Tracking. For cellular, open Settings > Cellular, select the relevant line or cellular-data options, and review the corresponding control; labels can vary by iOS version and carrier. Apple documents the setting and its network scope in its Private Relay support article.

Choose the method that matches the problem

  • A local Wi-Fi address conflict or setup issue: Ask the administrator about DHCP or use only the local settings supplied for that network.
  • A different route to websites: Connect through another Wi-Fi or cellular network. The public-facing address may change, but ordinary network switching is not a guarantee.
  • Privacy routing for supported browsing: Check eligibility for iCloud Private Relay, or use a VPN service whose current terms and practices you have reviewed.
  • Reduced tracking across Wi-Fi networks: Leave Private Wi-Fi Address enabled where supported; it changes a MAC identifier, not an IP.
  • A site or managed network stops working: Check whether it relies on IP-based controls, then review Private Relay or VPN settings for that connection before changing local IP details.
