To change what opens in a new Firefox window, go to Settings > Home and startup and choose Firefox Home, Custom URLs…, or Blank page under Homepage and new windows. To reopen your previous windows and tabs automatically at every startup, enable Open previous windows and tabs in Startup. To restore the last session once, use Menu > History > Restore Previous Session.

These are separate controls: the homepage determines what a new window opens, while session restoration brings back windows and tabs from your previous browsing session.

Change the page Firefox opens in a new window

Firefox Home is the default. You can instead set one or more web pages as your homepage, or have new windows open to a blank page.

  1. Open the Firefox menu and select Settings.
  2. Select Home and startup.
  3. Under Homepage and new windows, choose Firefox Home, Custom URLs…, or Blank page.

Mozilla’s home page instructions describe these options and the alternative toolbar method.

Use one or more custom URLs

Choose Custom URLs… and enter the address you want. To open several pages as your homepage, open each page in its own tab, then use the displayed controls to enter the URLs or select Use Current Pages.

Set a homepage with the Home button

Open the page you want, then drag its tab onto the Home button in the toolbar and confirm the prompt. The Home button may not be visible initially; Mozilla says Firefox adds it automatically when you set a custom homepage.

Automatically reopen your previous windows and tabs

To make Firefox restore the previous session whenever it starts, turn on Open previous windows and tabs. Depending on how Settings is presented in your Firefox interface, find the option under General or Home and startup, in the Startup section.

  1. Open the Firefox menu and select Settings.
  2. Open General or Home and startup.
  3. In Startup, enable Open previous windows and tabs.
  4. Close Settings; Mozilla says the change saves automatically.

With this option enabled, Firefox starts by restoring the previous windows and tabs rather than showing the homepage configured for startup. See Mozilla’s session restoration instructions.

Restore the previous session once

If you want to bring back your last session on this occasion without making session restoration the ongoing startup behavior, open the Firefox menu and choose History > Restore Previous Session. This is a one-time menu action, distinct from enabling Open previous windows and tabs in Settings.
