You can’t change your email account password in Thunderbird. Change or recover it through your email provider, then update Thunderbird’s saved sign-in or authorization token so it can connect again.
1. Change the password with your email provider
Open your provider’s account website in a browser and change or recover the password there. Thunderbird is an email client; your provider controls the account password. Mozilla’s Password Manager documentation explains that forgotten passwords must be recovered, reset, or changed through the mail provider.
2. Update the sign-in Thunderbird uses
In Thunderbird, open the app menu and select Settings. Enter pass in the settings search field, then choose Saved Passwords. Find the entry for the account or mail server you updated.

If the account uses a normal password
Select the relevant server entry and use the edit action to update the username or password. Alternatively, remove the entry; Thunderbird should prompt you for the new credential when it next connects.

If the account uses OAuth2
OAuth2 entries are provider-issued access tokens, not your account password. Remove the token from Saved Passwords. When Thunderbird next needs access, sign in through the provider’s authorization prompt and grant access as requested. Mozilla describes this flow in its Yahoo and AOL OAuth2 guidance.
| Authentication method | What Thunderbird stores | What to do after changing your provider password |
|---|---|---|
| Normal password | A saved username and password for a mail server | Edit or remove the relevant Saved Passwords entry, then provide the updated password when prompted. |
| OAuth2 | A provider-issued access token | Remove the token and complete the provider’s sign-in and authorization prompt again. |
3. Check incoming and outgoing authentication if mail still fails
Receiving and sending mail can use separate server configurations. If Thunderbird still cannot connect, inspect the account’s incoming Server Settings and the outgoing SMTP configuration. The required authentication method depends on your provider.

Microsoft-hosted accounts
For the Microsoft-hosted services covered by Mozilla’s Microsoft authentication guidance, basic username-and-password authentication has been deprecated. Mozilla’s article, last updated July 22, 2026, describes OAuth2 settings for incoming and outgoing mail and notes that this area is evolving. Follow its current provider-specific instructions and keep Thunderbird up to date; simply entering your account password in a Normal password field may not be sufficient.

Provider requirements differ. For example, Mozilla’s Yahoo and AOL guidance describes a provider authorization flow and explains that Thunderbird saves the resulting token. If you do not know your account password, use the provider’s account pages to create a new one.
