To change videos without ending a YouTube Live broadcast, keep the YouTube event and encoder connection running, and change the video playing in the production software feeding the encoder. In OBS, use a VLC Video source as the playlist; advance to another item or switch to a prepared source or scene while the same encoder output continues. Use YouTube Studio’s End Stream control only when you intend to finish the broadcast. Test the transition first: a running event does not guarantee that every change will be free of a black frame, dropped frames, or an audio gap.

Where the playlist belongs

For an encoder-based broadcast of prerecorded video, make the playlist in OBS rather than looking for an in-stream playlist editor in YouTube Studio. OBS documents a VLC Video source that can play multiple video and audio files as a playlist. The source feeds the encoder output, and the encoder sends that output to the YouTube Live event.

The OBS Sources Guide notes that the VLC playlist source is available when VLC is installed. If VLC is missing, install it before configuring the source, then confirm that VLC Video appears among the source options in your OBS version.

Set up the YouTube event and OBS playlist

  1. Create or select the event: In YouTube Studio, create or open the encoder-based live event you intend to use. Copy the event’s server URL and stream key into your streaming software. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to the event.
  2. Add the playlist source in OBS: In the scene used for the prerecorded broadcast, add a VLC Video source. Select the local media files in the order you want them to play. The exact menu labels and controls can vary with your installed OBS and VLC versions, so confirm the available source settings in your version.
  3. Choose playback behavior: Set the playlist to play in order or shuffle, and enable looping if you want it to repeat. Decide what should happen when the source is hidden; OBS documents visibility behavior for media sources, but verify the result in your scene before the broadcast.
  4. Start the encoder feed and preview it: Keep the configured scene and encoder output active. In YouTube’s Live Control Room, check the incoming preview before starting the event.
  5. Change the content without ending the event: Advance the VLC playlist or switch to another prepared scene or source while keeping the same encoder feed connected. Do not use End Stream for an ordinary video change.
  6. Finish only when the broadcast is over: When you mean to end the live event, use YouTube Studio’s End Stream control and stop sending encoder content as directed by YouTube’s encoder workflow.

Configure and verify 4K/60 output

The playlist determines what OBS plays; the encoder settings determine the outgoing resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate. YouTube’s encoder-settings guidance lists 2160p (4K) at 60 fps. Its retrieved table gives separate bitrate guidance by codec: for AV1 or H.265, 10 Mbps minimum and 40 Mbps maximum; for H.264, 35 Mbps recommended. These are not one codec-independent target, so use the row for your selected codec and check YouTube’s current guidance when configuring the encoder.

YouTube transcodes live streams into different output formats for viewers. That does not remove the need for a stable, correctly configured encoder feed. The platform also says low latency is unavailable for 4K/2160 streams; 4K streams are optimized for quality at normal latency.

Test the transition before broadcasting

Make a controlled test at the intended resolution and frame rate—an unlisted event can help limit the audience while you check the setup. Preview the incoming feed in the Live Control Room, change playlist items as you plan to during the real broadcast, and check both the stream-health indicators and viewer-side playback.

  • Confirm the new video appears in the expected order and at the expected time.
  • Listen for audio gaps, unexpected overlapping audio, or a mismatch between picture and sound.
  • Watch for a black frame, a frozen image, or dropped frames during the change.
  • Check that the encoder remains connected and YouTube continues to receive the feed after the source or scene changes.

YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. Treat those as preparation recommendations, not technical guarantees about a transition.

Troubleshoot playlist changes

  • VLC Video is not available in OBS: The VLC playlist source requires VLC, according to OBS’s Sources Guide. Install VLC and check the source list again; confirm compatibility with the OBS version you use.
  • The next video does not appear: Check that the intended file is in the playlist, that the source is active in the current scene, and that playback is not paused or stopped. Test the control sequence in your installed OBS/VLC versions rather than assuming a universal button sequence.
  • The stream ends instead of changing videos: Check whether End Stream was selected in YouTube Studio. A content change should happen in the OBS playlist or scene while the encoder feed and YouTube event remain active.
  • The viewer sees a black frame or hears a gap: The documented playlist feature does not promise seamless transitions for every scene, source, codec, or machine. Reproduce the change in a controlled test and adjust the source or scene workflow based on what you observe.
  • YouTube reports poor stream health at 4K/60: Check the encoder’s resolution, frame rate, selected codec, and matching bitrate guidance, then check the connection and YouTube’s stream-health feedback. Do not substitute the H.264 recommendation for the AV1/H.265 range, or vice versa.
  • 4K/60 has more delay than expected: YouTube does not offer its low-latency option for 4K/2160 streams. Use normal latency for 4K, or reconsider the resolution if lower latency matters more than 4K image quality.
