Microsoft Word does not have a built-in Change Calendar Year command for ordinary calendar templates. In most Word calendars, the months and dates are static text inside tables, text boxes, shapes, or images. To use the template for another year, open the original template and replace the displayed dates manually.
Be careful with instructions that say to choose Page Design > Change Template > Set Calendar Dates. That command belongs to Microsoft Publisher, not Word.
Change the year in a Word calendar template
These steps apply to Word for Microsoft 365, Word 2024, Word 2021, Word 2019, and Word 2016 on Windows. The names and locations of commands can differ in Word for Mac and Word for the web.

- Select File > Open.
- Double-click This PC.
- Browse to the Custom Office Templates folder under My Documents.
- Select the calendar template and choose Open.
- Change the year, month names, and day numbers in the calendar.
- Select File > Save, then close the template.
Opening the template itself is important. If you choose File > New and create a document from the template, you normally edit only that new document; the original template remains unchanged.

What you need to edit manually
Inspect every part of the calendar rather than changing only the large year heading. Depending on the design, you may need to update:
- The year displayed on the cover or in each month heading
- The weekday alignment
- The day number in every calendar cell
- Whether February has 28 or 29 days
- Month layouts that begin on a different weekday in the new year
- Small date labels in headers, footers, or decorative graphics
For example, changing a heading from 2025 to 2026 does not move the dates automatically. If January 1 is positioned under Wednesday in the old calendar, you must move the numbers so they begin under the correct weekday for the new year.
A practical manual-editing method
- Make a backup copy of the original
.dotxor.dotmfile. - Use a reliable calendar for the target year as a reference.
- Update one month at a time, starting with the weekday position of the first day.
- Check the final day of each month before moving to the next one.
- Pay special attention to February and leap years.
- Print or export a PDF and check that no date is missing, duplicated, or placed under the wrong weekday.
Calendar dates in Word are often held in table cells. If selecting a number highlights the whole table or a larger object, use the table controls, Layout tab, or Shape Format options to edit the object rather than repeatedly clicking the text.

Why the year does not update automatically
A standard Word calendar template is usually a designed page, not a calendar calculation system. Its visible dates may be:
- Plain text in a table
- Text inside shapes or text boxes
- Static images
- Individual fields or content controls
Word’s template instructions allow you to open a template, make changes, and save it, but they do not provide a calendar recalculation feature. There is no documented Word command named Set Calendar Dates or Change Calendar Year.
Do not confuse Word with Publisher
Microsoft Publisher has a calendar-specific date tool. In Publisher, the path is:

Page Design > Change Template > Set Calendar Dates
Publisher then provides Start date and End date fields and lets you either apply the template to the current publication or create a new publication. That procedure does not work in Word because Word does not contain the same calendar-generation command.
What Word’s date picker can—and cannot—do
Word includes a Date Picker Content Control, but it is for entering or selecting an individual date. It is not a tool for rebuilding all 12 months of a calendar.
To insert one:
- Enable the Developer tab by selecting File > Options > Customize Ribbon.
- Under Main Tabs, select Developer, then choose OK.
- Place the cursor where the date should appear.
- Select Developer > Date Picker Content Control.
- Select the control and choose Developer > Properties to change its date-display format.
This can be useful for a form with a date field, but adding a date picker will not calculate weekday positions or populate a yearly calendar.
Be careful with automatically updating dates
You can insert a date using Insert > Text > Date & Time. If you select Update automatically, Word inserts a field that changes when the document opens. That behavior is usually unsuitable for a calendar meant to remain fixed for a particular year.
If you type a different date into an automatically updating field and save the document, Word can restore the current date the next time the document opens. For a fixed calendar, use ordinary text or convert the field to static text after confirming the result.
To edit an updating date field, click the gray field, type the new date, and click outside it. To restore the current date, click the field and choose Update.

If Word will not let you edit the calendar
Several features can make a template appear uneditable.
The template is protected
Check Review > Restrict Editing or, for form controls, Developer > Restrict Editing. A protected document may allow only form filling or may require a password before its contents can be changed.
The content control is locked
Select the control and choose Developer > Properties. Under Locking, clear options such as Content control cannot be deleted or Contents cannot be edited, if you have permission to do so.
The file is in an older format
If expected controls or editing features are missing, select File > Info > Convert, choose OK, and save the converted document or template. Make a backup first because conversion can affect older formatting.
The calendar is an image
If the entire calendar selects as one picture, Word cannot change the printed numbers individually. Replace the image with a calendar designed for the target year, or recreate the calendar using Word tables and text.
Save the finished calendar correctly
When saving a reusable Word template, use File > Save As and choose an appropriate template type:

For most calendars, .dotx is the correct choice. Keep the original file and save the revised version with the year in its filename, such as Family-Calendar-2026.dotx.

Mac instructions use different template commands. Microsoft documents saving a Mac template through File > Save as Template, with choices such as Microsoft Word template (.dotx) or a macro-enabled template. Mac templates are commonly stored in:
/Users/username/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.Office/User Content/Templates
The underlying limitation is the same: an ordinary Word calendar does not automatically recalculate its year. You must edit its dates unless the file was specially designed with automation.
When to use another tool
If you need to produce a new calendar every year without checking hundreds of date cells, Word is not the best tool for a static template. Use Publisher’s calendar feature where available, a spreadsheet or calendar generator, or a custom Word macro that has been tested for the specific template. A macro-enabled template can automate a carefully designed calendar, but Word does not supply that automation by default.

Can Word automatically change all calendar dates when I replace the year?
No. A normal Word calendar template does not have a built-in annual calendar recalculation command. You must edit the dates and their weekday positions manually, unless the template includes custom automation.

Where is Set Calendar Dates in Word?
It is not a Word command. The path Page Design > Change Template > Set Calendar Dates belongs to Microsoft Publisher.
How do I edit the original Word calendar template?
Use File > Open, double-click This PC, browse to Custom Office Templates under My Documents, open the template, make the changes, and save it. Creating a new document from the template does not normally modify the original.
Can the Word Date Picker generate a yearly calendar?
No. Developer > Date Picker Content Control inserts an individual date control. Its properties control how that date is displayed; it does not populate or rearrange a 12-month calendar.

Why can I not edit dates in my Word template?
