You may be able to change a live lesson stream’s quality without interrupting it, but there is no universal method: it depends on the encoder, streaming platform and whether the recording is local or part of the platform archive. First distinguish viewer playback quality from the resolution, frame rate or bitrate your encoder sends. YouTube can create multiple viewer renditions from a live feed, so viewers may already be able to choose lower or higher playback quality without changing the source stream.
First decide which “quality” you need to change
Viewer playback quality
If viewers need a lower-bandwidth option, you may not need to change the encoder at all. YouTube says it automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats; platform transcoding creates renditions at different resolutions, frame rates and bitrates for viewers. Availability and controls depend on the platform. See OBS Project’s explanation of transcoding and YouTube’s live-stream health guidance.
Source stream quality
If you need to change what the encoder sends—resolution, frame rate or bitrate—you are changing the live input, not just a viewer’s playback selection. The title does not specify the encoder, its version, destination, ingest protocol or recording arrangement. Do not assume the active output can be changed without a reconnect or brief interruption: check the specific encoder and platform documentation for live changes before touching a critical lesson stream.

Identify whether “recorded” means a local recording made by the encoder, a platform archive of the live broadcast, or a video being looped as a scheduled stream. A stream-output change may affect a local recording if it shares the same output settings; a platform archive may behave differently. Check the recording product’s documentation and confirm how the change affects the file before proceeding.

Before changing encoder output, check the setup
- Identify the encoder and destination. Record the encoder name and version, platform, ingest method and current output settings. Look specifically for documented live changes to resolution and bitrate, including whether they require reconnecting.
- Choose a sustainable target. Match resolution, frame rate and bitrate to both the encoder’s capacity and the available upload connection. A higher target is not better if the connection cannot sustain it.
- Keep a continuity plan. For an important 24/7 lesson, test the change outside a critical session. If the encoder or service provides a documented redundant workflow, follow that workflow rather than improvising a handoff.
- Protect the recording. Confirm whether local recording is enabled, where it is saved, and whether its settings are separate from the stream output. Verify the resulting file after a test.
For YouTube Live, use settings appropriate to the input
YouTube’s current encoder guidance makes recommended bitrate specific to ingest codec, resolution and frame rate. Its examples include the following H.264 recommendations; these are YouTube Live input settings, not universal values for other platforms or codecs:
| H.264 input | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
The full table, including other codecs and resolutions, is on YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions page. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum of four seconds. It also recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health. YouTube says, “YouTube will automatically detect which encoder settings you chose.” That detection does not mean every active encoder can change those settings without disruption.

Changing quality in OBS Studio
These controls apply to OBS Studio; whether they can take effect without interrupting an already active stream depends on the OBS version, output configuration and destination. Check OBS and the platform’s live-change behavior first. OBS describes Output (Scaled) Resolution as the size sent to the stream or recording, while Base (Canvas) Resolution is the working canvas. Its overview guide also notes that 60-fps streaming can be much more taxing than 30 fps.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Check what is live. In OBS, open Settings and note the current Video and Output values. Do not assume changing the canvas changes the output size; verify Output (Scaled) Resolution.
- Select a target resolution and frame rate. Under Settings > Video, review Output (Scaled) Resolution and Common FPS Values. Choose a target your encoder and connection can sustain. If a change requires restarting the output, do not apply it mid-lesson expecting uninterrupted video.
- Review stream bitrate and keyframes. Under Settings > Output, inspect the streaming output settings. For YouTube, use its current guidance for the selected codec, resolution and frame rate; set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval where supported, and do not exceed YouTube’s four-second keyframe maximum.
- Apply only when supported live. If OBS or the destination documentation does not confirm that a particular setting can be changed while streaming, schedule the change for a safe transition or test. Do not treat a settings dialog accepting a value as proof that the active stream changed cleanly.
- Watch the result. Check YouTube Studio’s stream health and OBS’s connection indicator and dropped-frame counter. Confirm the actual resolution and bitrate reported by the platform, then verify the recording if one is being made.
OBS’s Help Portal explains that a rising dropped-frame count and a yellow or red connection indicator point to an unstable connection or insufficient capacity for the configured bitrate. OBS drops frames to avoid buffering. Reduce the target or restore the previous settings if health deteriorates.

Monitor YouTube health after a supported change
YouTube’s Live Streaming API reports stream status and health. Its issue guidance covers high or low bitrate, resolution mismatches or unsupported resolution, keyframe frequency and ingestion starvation. Ingestion starvation means YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming and can lead to viewer buffering. Use the platform’s reported issue to guide the fix rather than changing several encoder settings at once. See the LiveStreams API documentation and configuration issue descriptions.
Troubleshooting a quality change
- The stream reconnects or goes offline. The encoder or destination may not support that live change. Restore the prior output if needed, then make the change at a planned transition or use a documented redundant workflow.
- YouTube reports a resolution mismatch or unsupported resolution. Check that the encoder’s actual output resolution is supported and matches the intended configuration; do not rely on the canvas size alone.
- Bitrate warnings or buffering appear. Check the codec-specific YouTube recommendation, the configured bitrate and the stability of the upload connection. Lower the bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it.
- Keyframe warnings appear. Set a two-second keyframe interval where the encoder supports it, and keep the interval at or below YouTube’s four-second maximum.
- OBS dropped frames rise or its indicator turns yellow/red. The connection may be unstable or unable to carry the configured bitrate. Reduce the target bitrate or return to the last stable configuration, then check the network before trying again.
- The live stream looks right but the recording does not. Check whether the local recording uses separate output settings and whether the platform archive reflects the live input. Test the recording path independently before relying on it for a full lesson.
Or let it run in the cloud
