Open Create > Go live > Manage, select the scheduled or active stream, then look in its Edit or details/customization controls for the thumbnail setting. Upload the image and save. The exact control can vary, and YouTube says an updated thumbnail may take time to appear.
Change the thumbnail on a scheduled or active stream

Sign in to YouTube Studio and open Create > Go live.

In Live Control Room, open Manage and select the scheduled or ongoing stream you want to edit. YouTube documents Manage as the place to find scheduled streams; stream metadata is edited through the stream’s settings or scheduling controls. See Manage live stream settings and Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Open Edit or the stream’s details/customization view. Find the thumbnail setting, choose the image file, and save. If you do not see it in the first view, check the selected stream’s other edit or details controls: YouTube does not document one universal thumbnail-button location for every live-stream type.

Check the stream listing and its watch page to confirm the change. YouTube notes that a custom thumbnail update may take time to display, but does not specify a fixed propagation time. Its general workflow for a video is Content > select the video > Thumbnail > Upload file > Save. See Add custom thumbnails on YouTube.
The thumbnail is stream metadata: it changes the image viewers see before or around the live video. It is separate from the encoder’s stream key and incoming video feed. You do not need to replace the live feed or edit an encoder scene to update the watch-page image.

Change the thumbnail on a completed stream

In YouTube Studio, open Content > Live.

Select the completed stream archive and open its details.

Look for the thumbnail control, upload the replacement image, and save. YouTube’s general custom-thumbnail instructions use the Thumbnail section in the video’s Studio details; the exact presentation for a live archive may vary. See Archive live streams and Add custom thumbnails on YouTube.

What changes—and what does not
Changing the thumbnail updates the stream’s public-facing preview image. It does not change the music or video being sent to YouTube, and it does not require a stream-key change. YouTube documents stream metadata controls separately from the encoder settings used to deliver the broadcast. For a scheduled or encoder stream, use the selected stream’s Live Control Room edit controls rather than changing the encoder output.
YouTube’s guidance does not say that you must end a live broadcast to change its thumbnail. Avoid stopping a 24/7 stream solely to make this edit unless your own Studio controls or account-specific guidance require it.

Important archive limit for a 24/7 broadcast
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams that exceed 12 hours may not be captured at all. A continuous 24/7 broadcast should therefore not be treated as one guaranteed complete replay. This archive limitation is separate from changing the thumbnail on the live stream itself. The image is still the old one: allow time for the change to appear, then check both the Studio listing and the watch page. YouTube does not give a fixed wait time for thumbnail updates.

You cannot find a thumbnail setting: confirm that you selected the intended stream, then check its Edit, details, or customization controls. YouTube’s help pages describe metadata editing, but do not establish an identical control location for every stream type.

You are changing the encoder scene instead: that changes the live video feed, not necessarily the watch-page thumbnail. Return to the stream’s metadata controls in Studio.

The stream is no longer live: look under Content > Live and open the archive details. An archive may not exist for a broadcast that exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archiving threshold.
To check whether the broadcast itself is working, YouTube recommends previewing it in Live Control Room and verifying audio and video before going live. That is a stream-quality check, not a prerequisite for editing the thumbnail. See YouTube live streaming tips.
