On most Samsung Galaxy phones, go to Settings > Sounds and vibration > Ringtone, then select a tone. You can choose a built-in sound, use a compatible audio file saved on the phone, or assign a different ringtone to an eligible contact. Menu names and screens vary by model, region, and software version.
How to choose a built-in ringtone
- Open Settings.
- Tap Sounds and vibration, then Ringtone.
- If your phone has two SIMs and asks you to choose one, select the SIM whose incoming calls should use the tone.
- Tap a ringtone to preview it, select the one you want, and return or confirm as your phone prompts.
The list of available tones can vary by device or carrier. Samsung’s US sound and notification guide and Canada ringtone instructions document the common settings path, but do not guarantee identical screens on every Galaxy phone. A built-in ringtone is available without buying or downloading a sound.
How to set a custom audio file as your ringtone
First, make sure the audio file is downloaded or otherwise stored on your phone. Samsung UK lists MP3, WMA, AAC, and FLAC as supported formats; its guidance says M4A files need to be converted to one of those formats. These format details come from Samsung UK and may not describe every model or regional version.

- Open Settings > Sounds and vibration > Ringtone.
- Tap the plus sign to add an audio file.
- Choose the file and tap Done.
If you cannot find the audio under Tracks, check Folders. Some versions also offer Play selected highlights only, which uses a portion of the track rather than starting at its beginning. A track available only through a streaming service is not enough: Samsung UK states, “Tracks that you play via a streaming service cannot be set as ringtones.” Use a supported audio file stored on the phone instead.
How to give one contact a different ringtone
Samsung documents more than one route, and the menu depends on the phone’s software and region. One route is to open Contacts, select the person, tap Edit, choose View more, then tap Ringtone. Select a sound or add a file, return to the contact, and save.

On some phones, open the contact’s More options menu and choose Change ringtone/vibration > Ringtone. Contacts stored only on the SIM may not support a custom contact ringtone. If the options are missing, check whether the contact is saved to the phone or an account rather than only to the SIM. Samsung’s India guide and Hong Kong audio-file guide show regional examples; Samsung Hong Kong notes that its information applies to Hong Kong products.

- You cannot find Ringtone: Start in Settings > Sounds and vibration. If the labels differ, they may vary with your model, software version, or region.
- Your phone asks which SIM to use: Choose the SIM for which you want to change the incoming-call tone.
- Your custom file does not appear: Confirm it is stored on the phone, check Folders as well as Tracks, and make sure it is in a supported format listed in Samsung UK’s guidance.
- You cannot assign a tone to a contact: Check how the contact is stored; a contact saved only on the SIM may not offer that option.
Samsung cautions that screens and settings vary by model, region, and software version. Its Canada support page was last updated 22 July 2021, so use it as a general path rather than a guarantee of current labels on every device.
