To move Windows 11’s built-in volume, brightness, airplane mode, or virtual desktop indicator, open Settings > System > Notifications and change Position of the onscreen pop-up. Microsoft documents three choices: Bottom, Top left, and Top center. The setting may not appear on every PC yet, because Microsoft described it as a rollout feature.
How to change the on-screen indicator position
- Open Start > Settings, or press Windows key + I.
- Select System, then Notifications.
- Find Position of the onscreen pop-up.
- Choose Bottom, Top left, or Top center.
- Change the volume or brightness to check the popup’s new position.
The control changes the location of supported hardware indicator flyouts. It does not provide free dragging or a field for entering screen coordinates.
Which indicators does the setting move?
Microsoft identifies the setting for hardware indicators related to brightness, volume, airplane mode, and virtual desktops. It moves those temporary Windows popups; it does not move the taskbar, change the arrangement of displays, or reposition a monitor’s own menu.
What to do if the setting is missing
The option is not guaranteed to be visible on every Windows 11 installation. Microsoft announced it in Windows 11 Insider Preview Canary Build 27959 on October 6, 2025, and reported the feature rolling out on October 16, 2025. Those announcements do not provide an exhaustive list of eligible devices or establish that all PCs receive it at once. Check for available Windows updates and confirm your Windows version and build. If it remains absent, your installation may not have received the feature.

Changing taskbar alignment will not help: that is a separate setting and does not control hardware indicator popups.
Built-in setting or ModernFlyouts?

Make sure you are moving the right thing
- Windows indicator popup: Use the Notifications setting described above.
- Taskbar: Taskbar customization is separate; see Microsoft’s Windows 11 taskbar guidance.
- Monitor brightness or on-screen display (OSD): External monitor brightness may require the monitor’s physical controls, depending on the device. Windows’ indicator-position setting does not move the monitor’s own OSD. See Microsoft’s brightness guidance.
- Display layout or orientation: Those controls arrange or rotate displays, not the indicator popup. See Microsoft’s multiple-monitor guidance.
