You cannot change the keyboard-light color on every Lenovo laptop. Lenovo uses several keyboard types: some support only a white backlight with Low, High, and Off settings, while others support RGB or four-zone RGB lighting.
The exact model matters more than the Lenovo brand. For example, Lenovo documents brightness controls—not a color picker—for the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 Aura Edition and ThinkPad X1 2-in-1 Gen 10 Aura Edition. The Legion Pro 5 16IRX9, by contrast, has RGB lighting, but its RGB controls may be missing from Lenovo Vantage until the required software, BIOS, and keyboard firmware are installed.
First, identify what your Lenovo keyboard supports
Before changing settings, check the exact model in Windows:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type msinfo32 and press Enter.
- Look for System Model.
You can also find the model in Settings → System → About, or on the label underneath the laptop. Search Lenovo Support for that complete model name and check whether its specifications mention RGB, 4-zone RGB, or only a backlit keyboard.

ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 Aura Edition
Lenovo’s documented settings for this model are in Lenovo Vantage:
- Open Lenovo Vantage from the Start menu.
- Select Menu.
- Open Input & Accessories.
- Select Keyboard backlight settings.
These controls adjust the keyboard backlight. Lenovo’s documentation for this model does not provide a color picker, so do not assume that this menu can change the light from white to red, blue, or another color.
You can also press Fn + Spacebar repeatedly. The documented sequence is:
- Low
- High
- Off
On this system, the shortcut changes brightness or state—not RGB color.

ThinkPad X1 2-in-1 Gen 10 Aura Edition
The documented Lenovo Vantage path is the same:
Lenovo Vantage → Menu → Input & Accessories → Keyboard backlight settings
Pressing Fn + Spacebar cycles through Low, High, and Off. Lenovo does not document this shortcut as a color-changing command for this model.
Legion Pro 5 16IRX9: restore the RGB controls
The Legion Pro 5 16IRX9 does support RGB lighting, but Lenovo states that RGB lighting settings may not appear in Lenovo Vantage when the required software or firmware is missing or outdated.

Update the three software or firmware components using Lenovo’s support page for the exact machine. BIOS and keyboard RGB firmware are separate from the normal Vantage update, so updating Vantage alone may not fix the problem.
After updating
- Restart Windows after each update if the installer requests it.
- Open Lenovo Vantage again.
- Look for the Legion keyboard or RGB lighting controls.
- Choose the available color, zone, brightness, or lighting effect options.
Do not install a BIOS or keyboard firmware package intended for a different Legion model. Match the package to the full model and machine type shown on Lenovo Support.
Yoga C940-14IIL: fix a backlight that switches off
The Yoga C940-14IIL has a documented backlight failure mode rather than a documented RGB-color setting. If the keyboard light turns off after roughly 15 seconds of inactivity, Lenovo attributes the issue to BIOS versions earlier than 57.

- Shut down the computer.
- Hold Fn and press the Power button.
- In the Novo Button Menu, select BIOS Setup.
- Open Configuration.
- Set KB Backlight Ctrl to Enabled.
- Press F10, or Fn + F10, to save and exit.
- In Windows, press Fn + Spacebar to change the backlight setting.
This procedure restores or controls the keyboard backlight. It does not add RGB color capability to a keyboard that was manufactured as a single-color backlit keyboard.
Why Fn + Spacebar may not change the color
Fn + Spacebar is often described online as a Lenovo RGB shortcut. Lenovo’s current documentation for the cited ThinkPad and Yoga systems says it cycles through brightness states only: Low, High, and Off.
If your model has RGB hardware, the shortcut may behave differently, or the RGB controls may be available through Lenovo software. If your model has a white-only keyboard, no key combination can create additional colors.

- Confirm the exact model number rather than relying on the product family name, such as “IdeaPad,” “Yoga,” or “Legion.”
- Check the model’s Lenovo specifications for RGB or four-zone RGB support.
- Install the latest Lenovo Vantage version.
- Install model-specific BIOS and keyboard firmware updates from Lenovo Support.
- Confirm that your Windows version meets the firmware package requirements.
- Restart the laptop and check Vantage again.
If Lenovo lists only a backlit keyboard and not RGB lighting, the absence of a color control is expected. Lenovo does not provide a universal Windows command-line syntax for changing keyboard-light color or brightness in these procedures.

What not to do
- Do not assume that every Lenovo laptop has an RGB keyboard.
- Do not treat Input & Accessories → Keyboard backlight settings as a universal RGB-color menu.
- Do not assume that Fn + Spacebar changes color; on the documented ThinkPad and Yoga systems it changes brightness or turns the light off.
- Do not flash BIOS or keyboard firmware from a similar-looking model.
The Bottom Line
There is no single Lenovo keyboard-color procedure. Check the exact model first. On documented ThinkPad and Yoga systems, Lenovo Vantage and Fn + Spacebar control backlight brightness, not color. On an RGB model such as the Legion Pro 5 16IRX9, update Vantage, BIOS, and keyboard RGB firmware before looking for the RGB controls. If the keyboard was not built with RGB hardware, changing its color is not possible.
