To change a WordPress featured image, open the post or page, reveal the settings sidebar with the gear icon if necessary, select the Post or Page tab, and use the Featured image panel. Choose Set featured image, select or upload an image, and confirm. For an image already in the article, the Image block’s More options menu can set it as the featured image.
Change a featured image in the block editor
- Open the document. In your WordPress dashboard, open Posts or Pages, then select the item you want to edit.
- Open document settings. If the right sidebar is hidden, select the gear/settings icon in the upper-right corner of the editor.
- Select the document tab. Choose Post for a post or Page for a page. The adjacent Block tab controls the currently selected block, not the document’s featured image.
- Open Featured image. Find the Featured image panel and select Set featured image.
- Choose or upload the replacement. Select an existing item in the Media Library, or use the upload control to add a file from your computer. Select the image and confirm with Set featured image.
- Save the change. Select Update, Publish, or the equivalent save control. The new image is now attached to that post or page.
Replace an image that is already assigned
Open the same Featured image panel and select Replace. Pick another Media Library item or upload a new file, then save the document. Replacing the featured image does not automatically replace images inserted in the article body.
Remove the featured image
In the Featured image panel, select Remove, then update or publish the document. Removing the assignment does not delete the media file from the Media Library and does not remove an image block from the article.
Set an image from inside the article
If the desired image is already inserted as an Image block:

- Select the image in the editor.
- Open the block’s More options menu (the three-dot button in the block toolbar).
- Choose Set as featured image.
- Save or update the post.
This shortcut assigns the existing image to the document. It does not require adding a second copy of the file.
Featured image versus an image in the content
They are separate settings
A featured image belongs to the post or page as document metadata. It does not have to appear anywhere in the article body. An Image block is content placed at a particular position in the editor. You can therefore have a featured image that is not visible in the article, an in-content image that is not featured, or both.
Assignment is not the same as display
Setting an image attaches it to the document, but the front end decides where visitors see it. A theme may show featured images on the home page, blog index, archive cards, search results, social previews, or the individual post. Another theme may hide it on the single-post view. The editor’s assignment can be correct even when the image is not visible in one of those locations.
When the featured image does not appear
Check the editor context
- Confirm that you are editing the intended post or page, not a reusable block or a template.
- Open the gear icon if the sidebar is closed.
- Select the Post or Page tab rather than only the selected block’s settings.
- After changing the image, select Update or Publish.
Check the theme’s template
A theme controls whether a featured image is rendered and how it is cropped or positioned. The image may appear on an archive but not on the single-post page, or the reverse. Compare the public page, the site’s home or blog index, and an incognito window to rule out a stale browser or caching layer.

Do not confuse a post with a template
The Site Editor can edit templates that govern many pages at once. The Post Featured Image block displays the current post’s assigned image in a template, often inside a Query Loop. If that block is missing, moving it or changing its visibility affects presentation for the template; it does not assign a different image to each post.
Using the Site Editor for template display
Block themes expose template controls in Appearance → Editor (the exact label can vary). To control where featured images appear across a layout:
- Open the Site Editor and select the relevant template or template part.
- Select the Post Featured Image block, or add one where the design should show the current post’s image.
- Adjust its placement and available presentation settings, then save the template.
This changes display for documents using that template. It is different from opening one post and changing its Featured image panel. On a page, the page details sidebar may also expose a featured-image field; the available controls depend on the theme and editing context.

- Open the gear icon and verify the sidebar is visible.
- Select the document-level Post or Page tab.
- Confirm that the item is a post or page that supports featured images.
- Reload the editor and check whether a plugin or custom post type changes the available panels.
- Ask the site administrator whether the theme or a plugin has disabled featured-image support for that content type.
A missing control can result from any of these conditions; do not assume a theme or plugin is always the cause before checking the editor context.
Image selection and publishing checks
Before selecting the file
- Use an image you have permission to publish.
- Choose a clear focal point that survives the theme’s crop.
- Use a descriptive media title and alternative text when the image conveys information.
- Check the file’s orientation and resolution against the design used by your theme.
After updating
- Refresh the public page and the blog or archive where the image should appear.
- Check both desktop and narrow-screen layouts because responsive crops can differ.
- If a social card still shows the old image, allow the relevant cache or social preview service to refresh; changing the WordPress assignment does not instantly invalidate every external cache.

Common problems and fixes
The image is set but not visible on the post
The theme may hide featured images on single-post templates. Check the blog index and inspect the template’s Post Featured Image block in the Site Editor.

The old image still appears
Confirm that the post was updated, then refresh without the browser cache and check any WordPress, hosting, or CDN cache. External previews can retain an older card until their own cache expires.
The wrong image changed
Return to the document list and verify the post or page title and URL before editing. If you used an Image block shortcut, confirm that the selected block belongs to the intended document.
There is no Set as featured image option
Select the actual Image block, not a Group, Gallery, or paragraph, and open its More options menu. If the option remains absent, use the document’s Featured image panel or check whether the content type supports featured images.

Select the Post or Page tab at the top of the sidebar. Block settings describe the selected block; document settings contain the featured-image assignment.

Can a page have a featured image?
Yes, when the page’s theme and content type expose featured-image support. The Page tab uses the same document-level workflow, although available controls can differ.
Will changing the featured image change the image inside the article?
No. It changes the document-level assignment only. Replace or delete an Image block separately if the in-content picture should change.
Does removing a featured image delete it from the Media Library?
No. Remove unassigns the image from the post or page; the uploaded media remains available in the Media Library.
Why does the image look cropped?
The active theme or template controls the displayed dimensions and crop. The original media file is not necessarily being altered.
