Safari has no separate setting for choosing an email app. On a Mac, change the default in Mail’s General settings; on an iPhone or iPad, choose an email app in Default Apps settings. These choices control which app handles email links—they do not change your email account or address.

Change the default email app on a Mac

Apple says Mail is the default email app and opens when you click an email link. To use another app, select it in Mail’s settings:

  1. Install the email app you want to use.
  2. Open Mail and make sure it is configured with an email account. Apple says you can remove or disable that account after setup.
  3. In the menu bar, choose Mail > Settings > General. In older macOS versions, the menu may say Preferences instead of Settings.
  4. Open the Default email reader menu and select your app. If it is not listed, choose Select and locate the app.

Apple’s instructions are at Change the default email app in Mail on Mac.

Using webmail instead of an email app

On a Mac, you can choose a browser from Mail’s Default email reader menu. That does not guarantee that clicking an email link will open your webmail automatically. The browser or webmail service may have its own settings that affect what happens.
