Change the image in the encoder that is already sending your live stream—such as OBS—without stopping the encoder or ending the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Keep the music source active, switch or update the visual, then verify the picture and audio in OBS and YouTube’s Live Control Room preview.
Change the image while the stream is live
The background is part of the picture your encoder sends to YouTube. Replace or switch that visual in your production software while the encoder continues transmitting. These are general OBS workflow steps, not a special YouTube image-switch feature; exact controls can vary by software and version.
- Prepare the replacement. In OBS, add the replacement image as a source or place it in a scene prepared for the change. Check its crop, size, and position in the preview before switching to it.
- Protect the music and other scene elements. Confirm the music audio source remains active. If the background shares a scene with overlays or other visual elements, make sure you do not hide or remove them unintentionally.
- Change the visual. Switch to the prepared scene or update the image source in OBS while leaving the live output running.
- Verify the result. Check the OBS output and YouTube’s Live Control Room preview. Confirm the new image is visible and the music continues before leaving the controls.
- Recover if something goes wrong. If the image is blank or the music stops, restore the previous scene or source promptly while keeping the encoder transmitting.
What not to stop or change
Do not click Stop Streaming in OBS or End Stream in YouTube Studio if your goal is to keep the broadcast continuous. YouTube’s encoder guidance says to stop sending content from the encoder to end the stream. The image change belongs in the encoder’s production picture, not in the stream’s connection settings.

Your stream URL and stream key connect the encoder to YouTube and allow YouTube to accept its feed. YouTube Studio’s live settings are for stream details and related options such as metadata, key management, and auto-start or auto-stop. Resetting a key is a security action, not a way to change the image.

Choose the safer visual-change method
| Method | Useful when | Watch for |

| Change the image source in the current scene | You only need to replace the background and want to keep the rest of the scene in place. | Do not disturb overlays, other sources, or audio elements in that scene. |
| Switch to a prepared scene | You want to preview the replacement and have the previous scene ready to restore. | Check that the prepared scene includes the intended overlays and audio setup. |
| Edit YouTube stream settings | You need to manage stream metadata, keys, privacy, or related broadcast settings. | This does not change the live picture; make the visual change in the encoder. |
If the picture or music is interrupted
- The preview is blank: Switch back to the previous scene or restore the previous image source, then check the replacement’s placement in the encoder preview.
- The music stops: Restore the prior scene if needed and check that the music source is still active. A scene change can affect elements beyond the background.
- The OBS preview changes but YouTube does not: Check the encoder’s live output and YouTube’s Live Control Room preview before making another change. Do not assume the scene switch reached the broadcast until you verify it.
- You are considering resetting the stream key: A key reset is not an image fix. YouTube describes keys as connection information for the encoder; reset one when needed for security, not to replace a background.
