To change the prerecorded video in an always-on YouTube stream without ending the broadcast, change the media source in the encoder or cloud service that is sending the video. Keep that encoder’s connection to YouTube running. YouTube Live Control Room manages the stream connection, but its documented controls do not include swapping the local video file.
Why the change happens in the encoder
Your encoder sends the video feed to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key. YouTube receives that feed; the video file or playlist is selected upstream in the encoder or hosted streaming service. So, replacing a product video means changing the media source while leaving the YouTube-facing encoder output connected. YouTube’s encoder setup documentation describes ending a stream by stopping the content sent from the encoder, not by replacing a file in Live Control Room: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
This is a workflow based on YouTube’s encoder model and OBS’s media-source controls. YouTube does not promise that every encoder or hosted service can switch files without a brief audio or visual transition. Test your exact setup before relying on an unattended change.

Change the video in OBS without stopping the stream
OBS can play a single supported media file with a Media Source. To manage several videos as a playlist, use the VLC Video source. VLC must be installed for that source to appear in OBS. The OBS documentation covers its playlist, loop, and shuffle controls: Media Sources.

- 【Package Content & Note】 1x HD Audio Capture Card , 1x USB 3.0 to USB C Adapter (A-side 3.0, B-side 2.0), 1x user manual. Please note that you need to restart the OBS Studio software after the audio setup is complete, otherwise it will result in no sound output. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
- Confirm the live output is stable. Keep OBS connected to YouTube and verify the stream is active before changing the playlist. Do not stop streaming or disconnect the output.
- Open the VLC Video source properties. In OBS, select the scene containing the playlist source, right-click the VLC Video source in the Sources list, and choose Properties. If you do not see VLC Video, install VLC and reopen OBS.
- Edit the playlist. Add the new product video, remove or reorder files as needed, then apply the changes. Use media files supported by the installed VLC and OBS setup.
- Choose the playback behavior. Enable looping if the playlist should repeat. Use shuffle only if the videos do not need to play in a set order. For a precise product sequence, leave shuffle off and arrange the files in the intended order.
- Check the transition. Watch the OBS preview and listen for audio before and during the change. Confirm the correct product video is visible and that its audio is acceptable.
- Monitor YouTube’s outgoing stream. Check the stream preview and audio/video quality in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends previewing and monitoring a stream: YouTube live streaming tips.
For a one-off change, you can also edit or replace the file used by a Media Source, but the source must continue producing output. The exact transition depends on the encoder and media. A video may briefly go black, freeze, or change audio levels even if the YouTube stream itself remains connected.
Hosted streaming versus local OBS
A local OBS setup depends on the computer running OBS, the local media files, and the internet connection. A hosted continuous-streaming service runs the prerecorded feed in the cloud instead. YouTube’s encoder guide identifies Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 prerecorded streaming, but that page does not establish its current price, terms, playlist-editing controls, or transition behavior. Verify those details with the provider before choosing a service.

Keep the stream key and broadcast controls straight
The stream URL and stream key tell the encoder where to send its feed and allow YouTube to accept it. They are connection settings, not media-selection controls. You generally do not need to replace the key just to change a video. Keep the key private; if the encoder stops reaching YouTube, check that it is using the intended key and URL in the stream settings. See Manage live stream settings and YouTube’s live stream troubleshooting guide.

YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation also describes a separate broadcast going live while a 24/7 broadcast resource continues, stating, “However, you don’t stop streaming video since the 24/7 broadcast continues.” That is an API example about separate broadcast resources, not a Live Control Room command for swapping a video inside one running stream: YouTube Live Streaming API: Understanding Broadcasts and Streams.
Troubleshoot a video change that does not work
- The VLC Video source is missing: OBS requires VLC to be installed for this source. Install VLC and restart OBS, then check the Sources menu again.
- The new video does not appear: Confirm it is in the playlist, the playlist changes were applied, and the source is still present in the active scene. Check that the selected file can play in the installed media setup.
- The stream ends or disconnects: Make sure you did not stop OBS streaming while editing. Check the encoder’s connection, stream URL, and stream key against YouTube’s live stream settings. If YouTube reports an encoder or key problem, use its troubleshooting guide.
- There is a brief blank picture or audio interruption: YouTube’s documentation does not guarantee seamless file replacement across encoders. Test transitions in advance and watch the preview; if uninterrupted transitions are essential, confirm the behavior with the encoder or hosted service you use.
- The playlist plays in the wrong order or repeats unexpectedly: Turn off shuffle for a fixed sequence, reorder the entries, and check the loop setting to match the intended playback.
- The preview looks fine but the live result does not: Monitor the outgoing YouTube stream, not only the OBS preview. A successful local source change does not by itself confirm that the encoded feed is reaching YouTube correctly.
