Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Short answer: Microsoft has retired the Save screenshots to OneDrive switch. To back up screenshots now, include the folder where they are saved—normally Pictures—in OneDrive folder backup. In Windows, select the OneDrive cloud icon, choose Help & Settings > Settings > Sync and backup > Manage backup, turn on Pictures, and save. If you are trying to change where Snipping Tool saves captures, use Snipping Tool’s own See More > Settings page instead.
This distinction matters: OneDrive controls whether a local folder is synchronized, while Snipping Tool controls automatic saving and its Screenshots destination.
What changed in OneDrive screenshot settings?
The dedicated Save screenshots to OneDrive setting is no longer available in current OneDrive settings. Microsoft’s supported replacement is to back up the Pictures folder, so screenshot files stored there are synchronized to OneDrive. See Microsoft’s explanation in Save screenshots to OneDrive automatically.
That does not move every screenshot on your computer automatically. A capture must be saved inside a folder included in OneDrive backup. Windows and app versions can show slightly different labels, and work or school accounts may be restricted by an administrator.

Turn on OneDrive backup for screenshots
- In the Windows notification area, select the OneDrive cloud icon. You may need to select the hidden-icons arrow first.
- Select the OneDrive Help & Settings icon, then choose Settings.
- Open Sync and backup.
- Select Manage backup.
- Turn on Pictures (or the folder that actually contains your screenshots), then confirm and save the change.
Microsoft documents this path in Back up your folders with OneDrive. After enabling it, create a test screenshot and check that its file appears in the backed-up Pictures location and begins syncing. A cloud icon or status message in File Explorer indicates the synchronization state.
Check the Windows folder location
If a screenshot does not appear in OneDrive, verify where the capture was written. Open File Explorer and inspect Pictures and its Screenshots subfolder. Some applications use a custom folder, and older setups may have redirected Pictures elsewhere. Only files inside a folder selected for backup are covered by that setting.
Use Windows Backup as another route
Windows 10 and Windows 11 also expose folder choices under Settings > Accounts > Windows backup. Microsoft lists Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Videos and Music as folders that can be selected. This is a Windows Backup interface for the same practical goal—getting Pictures into OneDrive—not a replacement for Snipping Tool’s save controls. Details are in Back up and restore with Windows Backup.
Change Snipping Tool’s automatic-save behavior
If your question is about whether Windows saves a Snipping Tool capture, OneDrive is not the control to change. Microsoft says Snipping Tool captures are automatically saved to a Screenshots folder, and its own settings determine automatic saving and the default location.

The exact labels can vary as Snipping Tool updates. Microsoft’s current guidance is at Use Snipping Tool to capture screenshots. If you choose a folder outside Pictures, either move it under Pictures or include that custom folder in an appropriate OneDrive sync arrangement; merely changing Snipping Tool’s destination does not enable OneDrive backup.
Choose the right setting
| What you want | Where to change it | What it controls |
|---|---|---|
| Back up screenshot files already stored in Pictures | OneDrive cloud icon > Help & Settings > Settings > Sync and backup > Manage backup | Whether Pictures is synchronized to OneDrive |
| Choose whether Snipping Tool saves captures automatically | Snipping Tool > See More > Settings | Snipping Tool’s automatic-save behavior |
| Change the Snipping Tool destination | Snipping Tool > See More > Settings | The local Screenshots folder used by the app |
| Select standard Windows folders for backup | Settings > Accounts > Windows backup | Windows Backup’s Desktop, Documents, Pictures and other folder selections |
What happens when you stop folder backup?
Turning off Pictures backup can affect where files remain. Microsoft says OneDrive may ask whether you want files kept only in OneDrive or only on the PC. Read that prompt carefully before confirming. Choosing the wrong option can make files appear to disappear from one location even though they still exist in the other. If you need both copies, download or copy important files before stopping backup.
For broader OneDrive location changes, Microsoft provides How to change the default save location in OneDrive for Windows. Changing the OneDrive root location is different from changing Snipping Tool’s Screenshots folder.
Account and device differences
Personal versus work or school accounts
Some folder-backup controls are unavailable for work or school accounts, or are managed by an IT administrator. If Manage backup is missing, disabled or limited, contact your organization’s administrator rather than repeatedly reinstalling OneDrive. Microsoft’s settings overview also describes personal OneDrive collections that can include Photos and videos and Screenshots; those collection options are separate from the retired toggle and may not appear in every account.

Windows versus macOS
On Windows, open the cloud icon and use Help & Settings > Settings. On macOS, select the OneDrive cloud icon in the menu bar, open the three-dot menu and choose Preferences. The available backup choices depend on the OneDrive client and account. The Windows paths above do not map one-for-one to macOS.
Troubleshoot screenshots that are not syncing
The old screenshot switch is missing
That is expected: Microsoft removed it. Enable Pictures under Sync and backup > Manage backup instead.
Pictures is already enabled, but the file is absent
- Confirm the file’s actual folder in File Explorer. It may be in a custom location or in a different user profile.
- Check the OneDrive cloud status and wait for syncing to finish. A paused client, offline device or sign-in problem prevents upload.
- Make sure you enabled Pictures for the same OneDrive account that is signed in to Windows.
- Check OneDrive on the web for the expected folder and filename.
Snipping Tool does not save a capture
Open Snipping Tool > See More > Settings and review automatic saving and the Screenshots location. If the destination is unavailable or read-only, choose a writable local folder, then test again.
Manage backup is unavailable
Check whether you are using a work or school account with policy restrictions. Also verify that the OneDrive desktop client is running and signed in. Your organization may have deliberately disabled folder backup.

Files changed location after enabling backup
Folder backup can redirect known folders into OneDrive. Look in the OneDrive folder’s Pictures directory and review the prompt shown when enabling or stopping backup. Do not delete duplicate files until you have identified which copy is current and confirmed it is synchronized.

If you need a programmatic image of a webpage rather than a Windows desktop capture, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API. It accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response reports the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. It also includes an MCP server for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. See the complete parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I restore the old “Save screenshots to OneDrive” switch?
No. Microsoft states that this feature is no longer available in OneDrive settings; use folder backup for Pictures instead.
Does enabling Pictures backup change how screenshots are captured?
No. It synchronizes files in Pictures. Snipping Tool’s capture and automatic-save behavior remain controlled in Snipping Tool settings.
Why might my work account show fewer options?
An organization administrator can restrict folder backup and other OneDrive settings, so personal-account instructions may not all be available.
