To change how much Narrator says in Windows 11, open Narrator settings with Windows logo key + Ctrl + N, then choose a level under Verbosity. For a quick change without opening Settings, press Narrator + V to increase verbosity or Narrator + Shift + V to decrease it. In this guide, “Narrator key” means the Narrator modifier, which is Caps Lock or Insert by default.
Verbosity controls how much detail Narrator speaks. Navigation controls how you move through a page or app. Read-context settings control how much surrounding information is announced. These three settings work together, but they are separate, and Microsoft documents them in different places.
Change Narrator verbosity in Settings
- Press Windows logo key + Ctrl + N to open Narrator settings.
- Select Verbosity and choose a level from the list. Narrator applies the change immediately.
- If you need finer control, select Show all settings to reveal the additional options described below.
- Close Settings and test the change in the app you use most, such as your browser, Word, or File Explorer.
Microsoft’s customization chapter describes these steps in Chapter 7: Customizing Narrator.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The five verbosity levels
Microsoft’s complete guide to Narrator lists five levels. Each level adds spoken detail, so the higher the number, the more Narrator says.
#1 Best Overall
- KEYBOARD: The keyboard works for Windows with hot keys that enable easy access to Media, My Computer, Mute, Volume up/down, and Calculator
- EASY SETUP: Experience simple installation with the USB wired connection

| Level | What Narrator announces |
|---|---|
| 1 | Text only |
| 2 | Some control details |
| 3 | All control details |
| 4 | Some text details |
| 5 | All text details |
Choose a lower level if Narrator feels verbose while you read long documents. Choose a higher level if buttons, fields, or formatting are not clear enough to you.
Extra options under Show all settings

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChange verbosity and capitalization from the keyboard

The full list of shortcuts is in Appendix B: Narrator keyboard commands and touch gestures. Reading-related details, including capitalization, are covered in Chapter 4: Reading text.
Making Narrator read math differently
Microsoft’s reading chapter includes math among its reading-detail topics, and verbosity is the main control for how much Narrator tells you about text and controls. That makes verbosity the first setting to adjust when math feels too quiet or too wordy.
Rank #4

- Clear and Convenient: The bold, bright white and long-lasting characters make the keys on this PC or laptop keyboard easy to read and extra durable
The official pages I could check do not document a dedicated math-reading switch or a named Windows 11 option for it. Do not expect a setting called “Math” to appear. Instead, follow these steps:
- Set verbosity to level 5 (All text details) to hear the most text detail while you test.
- Open the equation or document you actually use and move through it with the arrow keys.
- Lower the level one step at a time until the speech is as detailed as you need.
Output can differ between apps, so test in the program where you read equations rather than relying on a single example.

Navigation modes, scan mode and views
Navigation decides how you move through content. Verbosity only decides what is spoken along the way.
| Method | How to use it | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Scan mode | Press Narrator + Spacebar to toggle it on or off. Jump by headings, links, tables and landmarks. | Moving through web pages and documents by structure |
| Normal navigation mode | Move among links, tables and other items. Microsoft recommends this mode for most readers. | Everyday browsing and reading |
| Advanced navigation mode | The four arrow keys move the Narrator cursor through the app’s programmatic representation. | Working with complex app layouts where Normal mode skips items |
Scan mode turns on automatically in Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge in supported browser scenarios, according to Microsoft’s complete guide to Narrator. Details on scan mode are in Chapter 3: Using scan mode. Changing navigation views and the commands that move between them are covered in Chapter 5: Navigation. Check that chapter for the exact sequence on your build.
Read context: how much surrounding information you hear
Read context is separate from verbosity. It determines how much of the surrounding content Narrator announces with the current item.
Recommended Free Tools
- Narrator + / reads the context.
- Alt + Narrator + / changes how much read-context detail is spoken.
- Ctrl + Narrator + / changes the order in which read context is announced.
To read text from the current position, start from the beginning, or read by different units such as words or lines, use the reading commands in Appendix B. Press Ctrl at any time to stop speech.
Keyboard shortcuts not working?
- Confirm which key is set as the Narrator key in Narrator settings. Caps Lock and Insert are the defaults on most keyboards.
- On a Japanese 106 keyboard, Microsoft documents different defaults: Insert and NonConvert.
- Check that you are using the correct keyboard layout. Shortcuts that use the Narrator key depend on it.
- Confirm that Narrator is running and that you are in the app you expect. Some shortcuts behave differently in scan mode.
Microsoft updates Narrator with Windows releases, so command names and setting labels can change. If a step above does not match your screen, check the Narrator pages linked in this article for the build you are using. The Microsoft guide dates from October 2026 and reflects Narrator as documented at that time.
