Change an app’s Local Network permission

Tap Privacy & Security.

Tap Local Network.

Turn the switch on or off beside the app you want to change.
You can change the setting later by returning to the same screen. Apple’s instructions for controlling access to information in apps describe this per-app control.
What Local Network access allows
In iOS 14 or later, an app that wants to browse your local network must ask permission the first time it tries. This can matter when an app needs to find or connect to devices on your Wi-Fi network, such as a display, printer, or other local device. The exact effect of turning access off depends on the app and the feature you use.

Apple Support warns that apps with this access can collect information about nearby devices to determine which networks you join and when. That information could be used to create a profile. If an app’s reason for requesting access is unclear, Apple advises contacting its developer. Apple’s Local Network privacy guidance explains the permission and its privacy implications.
If an app is missing from the list
An app may not appear until it has asked to use local network data. Try the app feature that needs to find or connect to a local device, respond to any permission prompt, then check Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network again. Apple’s general iPhone privacy controls guidance notes that apps appear in a permission list after requesting access to that data type.

What happens when you turn access off
Turning off this permission does not necessarily stop an app from using the internet or block every local-network interaction. Apple says apps can still interact with the local network through system services such as AirPrint, AirPlay, AirDrop, and HomeKit. However, this does not guarantee that every feature in a particular third-party app will keep working: a feature that depends on the app finding a local device may be affected.

Local Network and Location Services are separate permission categories in iPhone settings. Use the Local Network screen to control whether an app can browse your local network; changing Location Services is a different setting and does not change this permission.
