To change the size of the handwriting panel in Windows 11, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Pen & Windows Ink, expand Handwriting, and choose Font size. A Windows 11 how-to guide lists the options as Small, Medium, and Large, with Medium as the default. Microsoft’s Windows documentation confirms the location of the handwriting-view size preference but does not list the size values, so the exact labels can differ between Windows 11 builds and devices.
Change the handwriting panel font size
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices, then select Pen & Windows Ink.
- Expand the Handwriting section. If the option is nested, expand Use your handwriting to enter text first.
- Find Font size and choose Small, Medium, or Large.
- Open the handwriting panel in an app and write a sample line. Check that the writing area is comfortable to use and that it does not hide controls you need.
Pen and fingertip input both use this panel, so the setting applies whichever you use. You do not need a stylus to change it.
Handwriting size, font, text size, and display scale are separate settings
Four Windows settings are often confused with one another. Each one changes a different thing, so choose the one that matches the problem you are trying to fix.

If the handwriting text is hard to read but the rest of Windows looks fine, change only the handwriting font size. If menus and labels are also hard to read, use Text size or display scale instead.

If the Font size option is missing
Microsoft’s documentation describes the setting path but does not guarantee that every Windows 11 build or device shows the same controls. If you cannot find the option, work through these checks:
- Confirm that Pen & Windows Ink appears in Settings under Bluetooth & devices. If it does not, the device may not support pen or handwriting input.
- Open the Handwriting section and expand every nested option, including Use your handwriting to enter text. The Font size control may sit under one of them.
- Check for pending Windows updates in Settings > Windows Update, then restart and look again.
- If the option still does not appear, use Settings > Accessibility > Text size to make text larger across Windows. This does not resize the handwriting view itself.
Microsoft’s documentation does not describe a registry edit for this setting, so use the Settings path rather than changing the registry.

What Microsoft says about the larger handwriting view
Microsoft Learn’s Windows app documentation states: “The application UI does not reflow to accommodate the larger control, which might occlude important UI.” The reviewed page does not name an individual author. If you choose Large, expect the panel to cover more of the window, so test it in the apps where you write most often.

What to remember
Use Pen & Windows Ink > Handwriting > Font size to change only the handwriting view. For font family, system-wide text, or overall scaling, use the separate settings in the table above.

Microsoft’s documentation on the handwriting font cites Ink Free and Segoe UI as options. These may vary by build as well.

- Font family is a separate preference.
- Text size and display scale are separate Windows settings.
Note that a larger handwriting view can hide app controls, so check the result in the apps you use.
Keep your settings in mind whenever you adjust text size.
