Change a custom post type’s URL base in the rewrite argument passed to register_post_type(). Set slug to the path you want, choose whether to include the site’s permalink front base with with_front, then refresh rewrite rules so WordPress recognizes the new URLs.
Set the custom post type’s URL base
Register the post type on the init action and specify its rewrite settings. In this example, the custom post type is book, its URL base is /books/, and the site’s permalink front base is not prepended. The final single-item URL also contains that item’s own slug.

Choose whether to include the permalink front base
with_front determines whether WordPress prepends the front portion of the site’s permalink structure to the post type’s URL base. Use true to include it or false to omit it. For example, the code above uses false, so the custom base is /books/ rather than a path with the front base added.

Choose a distinct slug
Use a base that is unlikely to conflict with another route registered by a plugin or theme. WordPress’s Plugin Handbook notes that generic slugs can collide; a conflict involving a custom post type’s URL slug can often be addressed by changing that slug.
Refresh rewrite rules after changing the registration
Changing the post type registration may not update the stored rewrite rules automatically. If you made the change on a site, go to Settings > Permalinks in the WordPress admin and save the settings. WordPress refreshes rewrite rules when permalink settings are saved.

For a plugin, flush on activation
If the registration is part of a plugin, WordPress documents flushing rewrite rules from the plugin activation hook after registering the post type. Do not flush on every page load: flushing is expensive and should be reserved for occasions when it is needed. Use WP-CLI when appropriate
WP-CLI can list and flush rewrite rules. Its wp rewrite structure command changes the site-wide permalink structure, which is broader than changing a custom post type’s base; use it only if you intend to change that overall structure. See the WP-CLI rewrite command reference.

Be careful with a hard flush
A hard flush can update .htaccess. WordPress warns that this may overwrite custom rules in that file, so whether a hard flush is appropriate depends on the site’s server configuration. See WP_Rewrite::flush_rules().
If the new custom post type URL returns a 404
- Check the registration: confirm the post type is registered on
initand that therewritearray contains the intendedslug. - Check the front-base choice: verify that
with_frontmatches whether the URL should include the site’s permalink front base. - Refresh the rules: for a site-level change, save Settings > Permalinks. For a plugin, use an activation-time flush rather than flushing during ordinary page requests.
- Check for a slug conflict: if another plugin or theme uses the same route, choose a more distinctive custom post type slug.
For command-line inspection or refresh, consult the WP-CLI rewrite reference. Avoid a hard flush without considering whether it could affect custom .htaccess rules.
