To change how Kratos’s gear looks in God of War Ragnarök, open the equipment menu, select an armor piece, and choose Edit Appearance (also called transmog). Since the January 30, 2025 Patch 8 update, the feature is available from the beginning on PlayStation and PC; you no longer need to upgrade equipment to Level 9 first. The change affects the gear’s appearance, not its gameplay stats.
What you can change
God of War Ragnarök lets you change the appearance of equipment and armor using Edit Appearance. This is not a general character creator or a way to select a different facial or body model for Kratos. The look you apply is cosmetic: your equipped gear continues to provide its gameplay build.

How to change an armor appearance
- Open the equipment or armor menu.
- Select the armor piece whose appearance you want to change.
- Choose the on-screen Edit Appearance prompt.
- Select an appearance you have unlocked. On PlayStation, the cited control guide says to press Square to open Edit Appearance, then hold Square to apply the chosen look.
Button prompts may differ with platform or control setup. If you are playing on PC or using a different controller configuration, follow the prompt shown in your game.

Do you need to upgrade armor to Level 9?
No. Santa Monica Studio’s January 30, 2025 Patch 8 notes state that Edit Appearance no longer requires gear to be fully upgraded to Level 9 and is available from the beginning for all PlayStation and PC players.

Older guides may say Level 9 is required because that was the launch-era rule. Santa Monica Studio’s November 2022 beginner’s guide described applying an inventory appearance once equipment reached Level 9. That advice was superseded by the 2025 update.

You can choose only appearances that are unlocked or owned. Regular equipment appearances come from your inventory; some added looks have their own unlock conditions.

New Game+ armor variants
Santa Monica Studio’s April 5, 2023 New Game+ announcement introduced 13 remixed appearances of existing armor, with new color combinations and styles. Twelve could be purchased at the Huldra Brothers’ Shop and applied to existing Level 9-or-higher armor through the transmog menu. The Berserker Armor appearance required defeating the Berserker King on a New Game+ save.
