Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo change an image template’s color scheme, open its editable design, choose a saved color theme or brand palette, apply it, and review how the colors land on each page. In Adobe Express, you can also recolor a selected image or illustration with brand colors. “Dynamically” here means changing color assignments in the editor without rebuilding the layout; it does not mean that a flattened image automatically becomes editable or that the design updates live on its own.
Before changing the colors: check what is editable
A theme can change colors that the editor recognizes as editable elements. Adobe Express also documents recoloring selected images or illustrations, but that is not a promise to recolor every pixel in every imported image. If the design contains a flattened raster image, its separate original colors may not be exposed as editable objects. Check whether the artwork is selectable and whether the editor offers a recoloring control before expecting a whole-image palette change.
It helps to distinguish three scopes: a theme or brand palette applied to a design, brand colors applied to a selected graphic, and restrictions that control which colors collaborators can use in a shared template. They solve different problems, so choose the scope that matches your goal.
Change a template’s colors in Adobe Express
Create or save a reusable color theme
- Open the design in the Adobe Express editor.
- Open Theme and choose the brand under which you want the color theme saved.
- Add the colors you intend to use together, then save the theme. Adobe Help Center’s “Apply color themes to designs,” last updated 17 December 2025, says a theme can contain up to 20 colors and recommends focusing on two to five colors commonly used together for best results. The maximum is a product limit; the smaller number is Adobe’s recommendation, not a requirement.
Include black or white in the theme if those colors are part of the combinations you want to preview. A palette with fewer, intentional colors is often easier to evaluate than one containing every color used anywhere in a brand system.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Apply the theme and preview assignments
- With the design open, select Theme.
- Choose the saved color theme you want to apply.
- Use the shuffle control to preview another assignment of the palette, if available for that theme.
- Review each page before accepting the result. A palette may be appropriate overall while a particular assignment makes text hard to read or weakens the visual hierarchy.
Applying a theme changes the colors that the editor can associate with editable design elements. It should not be treated as a guarantee that every object, image, or pixel will change, nor that every shuffled assignment will be visually suitable.
Apply a brand palette across a design
- Open Brands and choose the brand whose colors you want to use.
- Select Apply brand. Use the adjacent settings to exclude colors or fonts if you do not want those parts of the brand applied.
- Use the shuffle control to preview another combination, if desired.
- Choose Apply brand to all pages when the same brand application should extend across the file.
Adobe Help Center’s “Apply brand to Adobe Express designs,” last updated 17 August 2026, documents applying brand colors and fonts, excluding either from the application, shuffling combinations, and applying a brand to all pages. Applying to all pages is a broad change: inspect pages individually for contrast, emphasis, and consistency rather than assuming that a single palette assignment works equally well everywhere.
Recolor a selected image or illustration
- Select the image or illustration in the design.
- Open Brands and choose the relevant brand.
- Open the more menu on the brand palette and choose Recolor graphics.
Adobe Help Center describes this action as using brand colors to recolor images or illustrations in the design. It is a separate action from applying a theme to the whole design. If the control is unavailable or the selected artwork does not respond as expected, confirm that the object is a supported, selectable graphic rather than a flattened image or a background that the editor cannot recolor as separate parts.

Make a reusable team template with approved colors
If the goal is not merely to recolor your own design but to keep collaborators within an approved palette, Adobe Express has custom template brand restrictions for Teams and Enterprise plans. The plan qualification matters: do not assume the same restriction controls are available on every plan.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open the file you want to turn into a template.
- Choose Share → Convert to template.
- Choose Style to configure color, font, and editing restrictions.
- Select the brands that define the permitted colors and fonts. Adobe Help Center’s “Create custom templates with brand restrictions for Teams and Enterprise,” dated 23 March 2026, documents a limit of up to five brands per template.
- Enable the relevant restrictions and save the template.
When Lock & Restrictions is enabled, collaborators are limited to colors and fonts from linked Brands and Libraries and cannot change those settings. Adobe Help Center’s “Brand style restrictions,” last updated 18 December 2025, says users also lose access to the Themes panel. True black, white, and transparent remain available in color pickers. This means collaborators should not expect to shuffle freely through themes after restrictions are enabled; the restriction is meant to constrain choices, not preserve every editing option.
How Canva’s Brand Kits approach differs
Canva’s official Brand Kits guide describes Brand Kits as a place for brand logos, colors, fonts, and assets. It says color themes define how colors work across backgrounds, elements, and text, and that applying a theme updates those colors together. It also describes generating themes from Brand Template suggestions or extracting them from existing designs.

The guide establishes that high-level behavior, but it does not establish a complete menu-by-menu process for recoloring every kind of imported image or template. For exact controls and availability in a particular Canva editor, follow Canva’s current in-product instructions. Do not assume that changing a Brand Kit theme will recolor every arbitrary imported photograph or flattened image.
Choose the right method for the design
| Need | Best-supported approach | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Preview a different palette on editable design elements | Apply or shuffle a saved Adobe Express color theme | Adobe says themes support up to 20 colors and recommends two to five commonly paired colors. This does not establish universal recoloring of flattened artwork. |
| Apply a brand’s colors and fonts, with optional page-wide application | Apply the brand in Adobe Express | You can exclude colors or fonts and apply the brand to all pages; inspect the result page by page. |
| Recolor a selected graphic with brand colors | Use Brands → more menu on palette → Recolor graphics | The documented action is for selected images or illustrations; it is not a guarantee for every imported image format or flattened design. |
| Keep template collaborators within approved brand colors and fonts | Use Adobe Express custom template restrictions | Adobe documents this for Teams and Enterprise; up to five brands can define allowed styles, and Themes-panel access is removed when restrictions apply. |
| Apply brand color themes to backgrounds, elements, and text in Canva | Use Canva Brand Kits and color themes | The cited Brand Kits guide gives high-level behavior, not a complete workflow for every image or template type. |
For any editor, check whether palette application reaches the objects you care about, whether a selected graphic can be recolored separately, whether the palette can be reused across pages or designs, and whether collaborators can be limited to approved colors. Also check whether the source artwork remains editable. Those distinctions determine whether a palette change is a quick editor operation or whether the artwork itself needs to be replaced or edited elsewhere.
Review color, contrast, and page consistency
Do not judge a palette only by its swatches. After applying or shuffling it, inspect text over backgrounds, small labels, buttons, graphic details, and any page that uses a different layout. A combination that looks balanced on a cover may make fine text difficult to distinguish on an information-heavy page. This is a practical review step, not a claim that the software tests contrast or guarantees accessible output.

The design may contain a flattened image or an object that is not exposed as recolorable artwork. Try selecting the graphic and using the documented Recolor graphics control. If the graphic is not selectable or does not respond, treat its pixels as non-editable in that workflow and replace or edit the source artwork rather than assuming a whole-design theme will alter it.

The result is inconsistent across pages
A page-wide application can still produce different visual outcomes on pages with different layouts and color roles. Review each page, then adjust individual elements or use a more suitable palette assignment where needed. Avoid enabling a restriction on a shared template if collaborators are expected to have theme-shuffling control.
Collaborators cannot access Themes or change colors
Check whether Lock & Restrictions is enabled and whether the template links the intended brands and libraries. Under Adobe’s documented restrictions, collaborators cannot change restricted fonts and colors and cannot access the Themes panel. If free theme selection is required, the template’s restriction settings need to match that workflow.
A Canva theme does not recolor a particular imported graphic
The Canva Brand Kits guidance establishes theme behavior for backgrounds, elements, and text, but does not establish that every imported image can be recolored. Check the selected object’s current controls and Canva’s current instructions for its image type instead of assuming the Brand Kit theme changes all image pixels.

Frequently asked question
Does changing a template’s color scheme change the original image file?
Not necessarily. The documented Adobe Express operations apply to a design’s editable elements or to a selected graphic through Recolor graphics. They do not establish that the separate original image file is modified. Keep source artwork separately if you need to preserve or reuse it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does changing a template’s color scheme change the original image file?
Not necessarily. Adobe Express’s documented theme and graphic-recoloring actions apply within the design; they do not establish that a separate source image file is modified.
