Short answer: YouTube’s documented process is to reset the key in Live Control Room and replace it in your encoder, but YouTube does not guarantee that doing this during an active loop stream will avoid an interruption. If the key is compromised, prioritize revoking it; for a planned change, prepare and test your actual backup setup rather than assuming a live key swap will be seamless.
What changing a stream key means for a live loop
A stream key is a credential that tells your encoder where to send its feed and lets YouTube accept it. Treat it like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed using it. YouTube’s official instructions explain how to reset the key and update an encoder, but do not describe or guarantee a way to rotate the key in an encoder while a live stream continues without interruption. Decide whether to reset now or plan a change
If the key may be compromised
Reset it promptly. Revoking a potentially exposed credential may matter more than preserving an uninterrupted broadcast. Be prepared for a possible interruption while you update the encoder and restore the feed.
If this is planned maintenance
Choose a maintenance window and prepare the encoder configuration and any backup encoder in advance. Test the actual setup before the change, watch the public player during the transition, and keep a local recording. These precautions can help you manage risk; they do not establish that changing the key will be interruption-free.

Reset the key and update the encoder
- Confirm access. A channel owner or manager can reset the key. Make sure you also have permission to edit the encoder’s stream settings.
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Go Live to open Live Control Room, then select the Stream tab.
- Reset the key. Find Stream key and select Reset. Check the current labels in Live Control Room, since interface wording can change. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings
- Copy the new key. Handle it as a secret; do not paste it into a public chat, screenshot, or shared document.
- Update the encoder. Replace the old key in the encoder’s stream settings with the new one, save the configuration, and reconnect or start the encoder as its software requires. - Check the stream. Confirm the encoder connects and that the public YouTube player receives the expected feed. If the encoder reports an error, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance includes updating the key in the encoder. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream
Reduce the risk of an interruption
Test the backup path before the maintenance window
YouTube recommends testing backup-encoder failover. Its suggested test includes stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet connection and confirming that the player rolls over to the backup. Test your own equipment and workflow ahead of time, and monitor the public player during any planned transition. Keep a separate recording
A local archive protects the recording, not live playback. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured; it recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. YouTube Help: Archive live streams

If the stream is already live
YouTube’s official materials do not settle whether changing the key in a particular encoder during an active loop will preserve that live session. Do not rely on an undocumented hot-swap. If continuity is critical and the key is not exposed, arrange a controlled transition and consult your encoder’s support documentation for product-specific behavior. If the key is exposed, reset it and accept that restoring the feed may take priority over avoiding a disruption.
Common problems and what to check
- The encoder rejects the new key: Confirm you copied the complete new key and replaced the old value in the encoder’s stream settings. Check YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting steps if the error persists. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream
- You cannot reset the key: Check that you are signed in with a channel owner or manager account.
- The player stops during the change: A reset and encoder update are not documented as interruption-free. Restore the encoder connection using the new key and verify the public player; use your tested backup arrangement if available.
- You expect a custom key to solve a live rotation: Custom keys support reusing stream settings for later streams; YouTube does not describe them as a way to change the key on an active broadcast without disruption.
