In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go Live > Stream, find Stream key, select Reset, then copy the replacement key into the encoder’s stream-key field. Only a channel owner or manager can reset the key. YouTube does not promise that resetting a key during an active broadcast will preserve the stream without interruption, so treat the change as a monitored handoff—not a guaranteed seamless rotation.
What a stream key does—and what resetting it changes
YouTube describes stream keys as “your YouTube stream’s password and address.” The encoder uses the key to send its feed to YouTube; the key does not determine the channel’s public identity or guarantee uninterrupted viewing. YouTube’s stream-settings guide explains the key and its reset controls.
The encoder has separate fields for the server URL and the stream key. When updating the credential, replace the key only; do not paste it over the server URL. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover both fields.
Before you reset the key
- Confirm the reason. A compromised key is a reason to reset it. Treat the replacement as a secret and share it only with people who need to configure the encoder.
- Identify the active encoder. Confirm which computer or service is sending the live feed and who can change its settings.
- Confirm Studio access. The person performing the reset must be a channel owner or manager; editors and viewers cannot reset the key.
- Arrange a change window. Have the encoder operator ready and able to monitor Live Control Room. YouTube’s published instructions explain how to reset and replace a key, but do not state whether an active feed continues during the reset or guarantee zero interruption.
Reset the key and update the encoder
- Open the stream controls. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live, then open the Stream tab in Live Control Room.
- Reset the key. In the Stream key section, select Reset beside the hidden key.
- Copy the replacement. Copy the newly generated key and keep it private.
- Update the encoder’s key field. Paste the new value into the stream-key field for the encoder that sends this channel’s feed. Leave the server URL and other settings unchanged.
- Check the ingest. Confirm that the encoder is sending and that Live Control Room receives the feed or shows its preview/status.
- Verify the viewer path. Check the channel or watch page and test from a mobile device. YouTube recommends checking event accessibility and monitoring audio and video quality; see its live-streaming tips.
Check reused stream settings and scheduled streams
YouTube lets channels create custom stream keys for reuse. Reusing settings for a new stream can also copy the prior stream’s metadata, settings, and key. If your workflow reuses an earlier stream, verify that the encoder and selected stream are using the replacement key after the reset.

For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s encoder instructions say to start the encoder, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, and then select Go live. That is a scheduled-start sequence, not a documented guarantee that an already-live broadcast can change keys without interruption.
Verify resilience beyond the key change
A key reset addresses the credential used by the encoder; it does not solve every possible interruption. YouTube recommends testing encoder failover—for example, by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable—and confirming that the backup takes over. It also recommends checking that local archive files remain intact and continue to grow. These are broader resilience checks, not a promise that key rotation itself will be seamless.

- Power: A UPS for the encoder and router/modem is an optional way to keep local equipment powered through some mains interruptions. It does not fix an internet outage or a YouTube ingest problem.
- Encoder: A tested backup encoder can address failure of the primary encoding process, but it does not cover a failed network path or every platform-side problem.
- Connectivity: A secondary internet connection can provide another network path, but it does not protect against encoder failure or YouTube ingest issues.
YouTube’s pages describe the same Studio and Live Control Room workflow for this task; they do not specify a separate India-only key-reset process. The practical steps are therefore the same for Indian channels. Choose local backup arrangements based on your own equipment and connection; they are optional resilience measures, not YouTube requirements or guarantees.

Troubleshoot if the encoder will not connect
- The encoder reports a startup or connection error: Check that you copied the replacement key into the correct encoder’s stream-key field, then confirm the server URL is still in its separate field. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide directs users with encoder startup errors to obtain a key in Live Control Room, paste it into the encoder, and start the encoder.
- The encoder shows a preview, but the public event is not accessible: Check the event on the channel or watch page and on a mobile device. For a scheduled stream, follow the preview-then-Go live sequence.
- The software signs in to YouTube directly instead of using a stream key: Follow that software provider’s support instructions; YouTube directs users of direct-sign-in software to the provider for help.
- The stream runs longer than expected but has no single complete archive: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A continuous 24/7 stream exceeds that threshold, so do not assume it will appear as one complete archived video.
