For a thumbnail that appears when someone shares your Squarespace URL, open the page’s Page Settings → Social tab and upload an Alternate Social Sharing Image. To change the default for the whole site, use the Social Sharing panel. A favicon and a blog, product, event, or portfolio card image use different settings, so identify the surface you want to change first.
First, identify which “thumbnail” you mean
Squarespace uses separate image controls for three common places. Changing one does not automatically change the others.
Image shown when a link is shared
This is the social sharing image used by messaging apps and social networks when you paste a page URL. Use an alternate image for one page or collection item, or set a site-wide Social Sharing Logo as the fallback.
Icon beside the title in a browser tab
This is the favicon. It is configured in the Favicon panel and affects browser tabs, bookmarks, and similar browser surfaces—not the image selected for a shared-link preview.

Image on a blog, product, event, or portfolio card
These cards use the collection item’s Featured Image. A featured image can therefore change a grid or listing without changing the social preview for the item’s URL.
Change the thumbnail for one Squarespace page
Use this method when one page needs a different image from the rest of the site.
- On a computer, open the Pages panel.
- Hover over the page title and select the gear icon to open Page Settings.
- Open the Social tab.
- Drag an image into Alternate Social Sharing Image, or choose a file from your computer.
- Select Save.
The alternate image applies to that page when it is shared. If you remove it later, Squarespace can fall back to the site-wide social sharing logo where applicable.
Set the default thumbnail for the whole site
- Open the Social Sharing panel.
- Select + to upload or choose the site-wide social sharing logo.
- Select Save.
This image is the default representation for pages that do not have their own alternate social image. A page-level alternate image takes precedence for that page.

Scope, surface, and update behavior
| Setting | Where it appears | Scope | What can delay the visible change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alternate Social Sharing Image | Shared page links | One page or collection item | The social network or messaging app may cache and render its own crop. |
| Social Sharing Logo | Shared links without an alternate image | Site-wide default | Previously fetched previews can remain cached by the destination platform. |
| Favicon | Browser tabs and bookmarks | Site-wide | Browsers often cache favicons persistently. |
| Featured Image | Blog, product, event, or portfolio cards | One collection item | The page or collection layout may have its own display and cropping rules. |
Change a Squarespace favicon
- Open the Favicon panel on a computer.
- Upload a square image.
- Optionally add a separate alternate favicon for dark mode.
- Select Save.
Squarespace recommends a PNG between 100 × 100 and 300 × 300 pixels, with a maximum file size of 100 KB. Mobile browsers may not show a favicon even when it is configured correctly.
Change a card thumbnail with a Featured Image
For a blog post, product, event, or portfolio project, open that collection item in the Squarespace editor and replace its Featured Image. This controls the image used to represent the item in collection cards and listings. It is independent of the page’s alternate social image and the site favicon, so set both separately if you need the same artwork in both places.

Choose an image that survives platform cropping
- Use the clearest version of the subject near the center of the frame; social platforms can crop the edges.
- Keep important text away from the borders so a platform’s crop does not remove it.
- For Facebook sharing, Squarespace notes that images must be at least 200 × 200 pixels. Check the destination network’s current preferred dimensions because those requirements can change.
- Use a separate alternate image when a page’s subject is materially different from your site-wide brand image.
Use the desktop editor when controls are missing
Squarespace’s page-settings documentation indicates that some SEO and social settings are currently available only on a computer, not in the mobile app. If you cannot find the Social tab or Social Sharing panel in the app, sign in through a desktop browser. Labels and placement also differ between Squarespace 7.0 and 7.1; follow the controls displayed by your site’s version rather than looking for an identical menu layout.
Verify the new thumbnail
- Save the setting and leave the editor.
- In version 7.1, use the preview icon to view the visitor-facing page. An incognito window can prevent your own browser session from obscuring the result.
- Copy the public URL and paste it into the social or messaging service where the thumbnail matters.
- Allow for the service’s preview cache and its own crop before deciding that the upload failed.
Troubleshooting
The shared link still shows the old image
Confirm that the page was saved and that the image is in the correct Social tab. If the page has an alternate image, that image takes priority over the site-wide logo. A social network may still be displaying a previously cached preview or may have selected a different crop. Test the public URL outside the editor and allow the destination service to refresh its cache.
Recommended Free Tools
The preview is cropped differently than the source
Squarespace states that the social network ultimately controls what appears in the post. The network can choose its own aspect ratio, crop, title, or description. Keep essential content away from the edges and check the result on the specific service where the link will be posted.

The favicon has not changed
Favicons are commonly cached more persistently than ordinary page images. Clear the browser cache, restart the browser, and check again. Test in a private window or a different browser to distinguish a local cache from a site configuration problem.
The Social tab is not visible
Open the site in a desktop browser, not the mobile app. Then check whether the site uses Squarespace 7.0 or 7.1, because the labels and placement differ between versions.
A card image changed, but the shared thumbnail did not
That is expected when you replace only a Featured Image. Set an Alternate Social Sharing Image for the page or item as well if its shared-link preview must change.

If you need to capture the finished Squarespace page for QA, documentation, or a content workflow, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot or PDF from one request. Its cookie and consent step accepts the banner like a visitor, then removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing result in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
Use the API documentation at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/ for authentication and options. Replace the example URL with your public Squarespace page:
cURL
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://your-squarespace-site.com -o shot.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://your-squarespace-site.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://your-squarespace-site.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
You can add full-page capture with lazy images loaded, a chosen CSS element, dark mode, device or viewport settings, retina scale, PDF paper and page-range controls, custom CSS or JavaScript, clicks, selector waits, delays, network-idle waits, blocked ads or resource types, custom headers and cookies, timezone or geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, a chosen cache TTL, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, and a usage API. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify migration.

Quick decision guide
- Shared link uses the wrong picture: set an Alternate Social Sharing Image.
- Every page needs the same fallback: set the Social Sharing Logo.
- Only the browser-tab icon is wrong: use the Favicon panel.
- A blog, product, event, or portfolio card is wrong: replace its Featured Image.
- The editor lacks social controls: switch to a desktop browser and check the site version.
- The setting is correct but the preview is stale: test outside the editor and account for platform or browser caching.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will changing a social sharing image alter the page’s text or layout?
No. It changes the image selected for link previews; the page’s on-site content and design remain separate.
Can one Squarespace page use a different thumbnail from the rest of the site?
Yes. Upload an Alternate Social Sharing Image in that page’s Social settings; pages without one can use the site-wide Social Sharing Logo.
Why might a mobile browser show no favicon even after I save it?
Mobile browsers do not always display favicons, so absence on a phone does not by itself indicate a failed upload.
