To change the image shown when someone shares a page link, update that page’s social-sharing image—usually its Open Graph og:image metadata—then publish the change and refresh the link preview on the platform where you plan to share it. A site builder may provide an image field; on a custom site, you can edit the page’s metadata directly. The platform may keep showing an older preview until it fetches the page again.

What controls the image in a shared link?

The image is usually specified in the page’s Open Graph metadata. Open Graph is a protocol for describing a web page when it is shared elsewhere. Its basic properties include og:image, along with og:title, og:type, and og:url. The metadata belongs in the document’s <head>, not in the visible body of the page.

The og:image value is the address of an image file that the sharing service can retrieve. It is separate from a browser-tab favicon, a logo shown in your site header, and an image uploaded directly to a social post. Changing one of those does not necessarily change the link preview.

There are two common ways to set the image:

  • Use a page builder’s social-sharing controls. This is usually easiest and may let you set a different image for each page or choose a site-wide default.
  • Edit the page metadata. On a custom site, add or update the Open Graph tags in the page head, or use the equivalent metadata fields in your content-management system.

Choose whether the change applies to one page or the whole site

Before editing, decide which links need the new image. A page-specific image is appropriate when one article, product, event, or landing page needs its own preview. A site-wide image is a fallback or shared default; it may be more suitable for pages that do not have a custom social image.

Wix documents both a page-level social-sharing image and a general social image for the site. Squarespace’s social sharing logo represents the whole site, so its documented control is not the same as a separate image setting for every page. The exact options and labels vary by platform and may change over time.

Change the image in Wix

These paths are Wix-specific. Dashboard labels can change, so if a label differs in your account, look for the page’s social-sharing settings or the site’s general social image setting.

Set an image for one page

  1. In Wix Editor, open Pages & Menu.
  2. Find the page, open its More Actions menu, and select Social share.
  3. Upload or select the image you want associated with that page.
  4. Save and publish the site so the public page can serve the updated metadata.

Set the site-wide general social image

  1. Open Website Settings → Site and Domain → Website settings.
  2. Find General social image and choose the image.
  3. Select Save and publish. Wix says publishing is required for this general image change to go live.

If a page has its own social image, check that page’s setting rather than assuming the site-wide image overrides it. After publishing, test the specific page URL you intend to share.

Change the image on a custom site

Add or update the Open Graph metadata in the page’s <head>. For example, replace the example page and image URLs below with the public canonical URL and image URL for your page:

  <meta property="og:image:width" content="1200">
  <meta property="og:image:height" content="630">
</head>

The first four properties are Open Graph’s basic metadata. The image type, dimensions, and alternative text are additional image properties. Open Graph describes image alt text as a description of the image, not a caption. Include it when it accurately describes the visual.

  • Use the full, absolute image URL rather than a path that only works relative to your site.
  • Make sure og:url identifies the public page you mean to share, and that the shared URL and canonical page are not accidentally different versions.
  • Check for duplicate or conflicting og:image tags. If a plugin, theme, or page template emits another value, a crawler may not use the one you intended.
  • Deploy the change to the public page. Editing a local file or saving a private draft does not update what a sharing service can fetch.

Prepare an image that survives platform cropping

Wix recommends an image of 1200 × 630 pixels, a 1.91:1 aspect ratio, and a file size no greater than 8 MB. It warns that images smaller than 600 × 315 pixels may appear small. These are Wix recommendations, not a universal guarantee for every platform or every preview layout.

Keep important text, faces, and logos away from the extreme edges: a platform may crop or resize the image for its own preview. Check the result at the target service rather than treating the source dimensions as a promise about the final crop. Wix also says WhatsApp displays a preview image only when it is under 300 KB; treat that as WhatsApp-specific guidance, not a general limit for all sharing services.

  • Use an image URL that loads publicly without a login, session cookie, or private-network access.
  • Use a supported image file and check that the URL serves the image itself, not an HTML page or a download error.
  • Keep the file within the limits relevant to the site builder and target platform, and compress it if it is too large.
  • Preview the image at small sizes. A legible design at full resolution can become hard to read in a compact card.

Publish, then refresh the preview on the target platform

Changing the page’s metadata does not necessarily update a preview that a platform has already fetched. Test the exact public page URL on the service where you intend to share it. Wix names Facebook Sharing Debugger, Twitter Card Validator, Pinterest Debugger, and LinkedIn Post Inspector as tools for inspecting previews. The steps and available tools can differ by service.

For Facebook, Squarespace’s troubleshooting guidance describes this workflow: submit the URL to Facebook’s Sharing Debugger, inspect the Link Preview, and click Scrape Again if the expected image is not shown. If the page is password-protected, Squarespace warns it may need to be made accessible during the refresh procedure. A refreshed scrape is not a guarantee that every other app will immediately show the same result.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a tool for changing og:image or forcing a social platform to refresh its preview. After you publish your metadata, you can use it to capture the public page and inspect how it renders. It accepts one GET request for a URL and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its cleanup options accept the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. It also has an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents.

For example, capture the public page after publishing (replace the target URL with yours):

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/page/ -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options. A screenshot helps check the rendered page; it does not replace the target platform’s own preview debugger. ScreenshotNeo’s free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Learn about ScreenshotNeo or sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.

Troubleshoot an old or missing preview image

What you see Likely cause What to check
The old image still appears The platform may be showing an earlier scrape. Confirm the page is published, then inspect or refresh the URL with that platform’s preview tool. For Facebook, use Sharing Debugger and try Scrape Again.
No image appears The image address may not be publicly fetchable, or the page may not expose the intended metadata. Open the absolute image URL publicly, inspect the page head for og:image, and check for access restrictions or a broken image response.
The wrong page’s image appears You may have edited a site-wide default instead of the page-specific field, or be testing a different URL variant. Check the individual page’s social settings and compare the URL being shared with the page’s canonical URL.
The image is tiny, cropped, or incomplete The source dimensions or file size may not suit the target service, or the preview layout may crop it. Review the image’s dimensions and file size against the builder’s guidance, keep essential content away from the edges, and inspect the target service’s rendered preview.
The change works on one service but not another Social channels can apply different image-selection criteria and may not share the same cached scrape. Test and refresh the URL separately on the platform where the preview is wrong. Do not assume one debugger’s result controls every app.
The browser tab icon changed, but the link card did not A favicon and a social-sharing image are different settings. Change the page’s social image or og:image, not only the favicon.

What to verify before sharing

  • The setting is for the intended page, or the intended site-wide default.
  • The new page is published and its metadata contains the image URL you expect.
  • The image URL is absolute and publicly accessible.
  • The dimensions and file size suit the builder’s guidance and any target-platform-specific advice.
  • The exact shared URL has been inspected on the service where you will post it.

Even with correct metadata, the configured image is not guaranteed to appear identically on every platform: Wix notes that channels use their own criteria. Treat the platform’s rendered preview as the final check for that service.
