In Social sharing image and SEO, select Add image or Change image, choose the file, and click Save. This image is a fallback: product, collection, blog-post, or theme-specific images can take precedence for particular URLs.
What Shopify calls a website thumbnail
“Website thumbnail” usually means the social-sharing image shown when someone posts a Shopify URL on Facebook, Pinterest, LinkedIn, messaging apps, or another platform that generates link previews. It is not necessarily the same image visitors see on the page.
Shopify’s free themes generally use a page’s featured image for product, collection, and blog-post links. A page without a featured image, such as a homepage or About page, can fall back to the store-wide social-sharing image. That means changing the preference image may change your homepage preview while leaving a product preview unchanged.
The term is also confused with a favicon. A favicon is the small icon displayed in a browser tab, history list, or bookmark. It is configured separately in the theme editor, usually under Theme settings and then Logo or Favicon, depending on the theme version.

Change the default social-sharing image
- Sign in to your Shopify admin.
- Open Online Store > Preferences.
- Scroll to Social sharing image and SEO.
- Click Add image if no image is selected, or Change image to replace the current one.
- Choose the image file from your device.
- Click Save.
The selected file becomes the store-wide fallback for URLs that do not provide another suitable image. Saving the setting does not guarantee that every product or collection preview will use it, because page-level and theme-level sources can have higher priority.
Choose an image that works in link previews
Use a clear composition
Social cards are displayed at different sizes and crops. Put the important subject and any text away from the outer edges, use strong contrast, and avoid tiny lettering. A simple product photo, brand mark, or readable promotional design is usually safer than a crowded collage.
Upload the best-quality original
Shopify’s image guidance says its CDN optimizes storefront images. Upload the best-quality version you have instead of repeatedly compressing it before upload. The official social-sharing instructions do not establish one universal pixel dimension for this preference image, so do not apply favicon dimensions to it.
Use an appropriate file
Use a normal web image format that Shopify accepts in the picker and keep the subject visually legible on both light and dark platform interfaces. If the picker rejects a file, export a new copy in a broadly supported format and try again rather than changing unrelated theme settings.

Why the new thumbnail may not appear
A featured image overrides the fallback
For a product, collection, or blog post, inspect that resource’s featured image first. If one exists, the sharing platform may receive it instead of the image in Preferences. To change one URL without changing the store default, edit that page’s featured image.
Theme code can take priority
Shopify documents this precedence order: image references in theme code have the highest priority, followed by images uploaded in theme settings, followed by the image configured in Online Store > Preferences. If a theme hard-codes an image or inserts its own social metadata, the Preferences image may never be selected for that page.
The theme has its own social-media field
Some themes expose a social image in the theme editor rather than using the Preferences field. Open Online Store > Themes > Customize, then inspect Theme settings. Depending on the theme, look for Social media, Social sharing, or a related branding section. Also inspect Theme settings > Checkout > Logo if the theme documentation points there. A field that looks blank in Preferences does not prove that the theme has no image configured.
Refresh and verify the preview
Test the exact URL
Share the exact product, collection, blog, homepage, or other URL whose preview matters. Different URLs can legitimately use different images because their metadata sources differ. Check the title, description, destination, and image together rather than judging the thumbnail alone.

Account for platform caching
Social networks and messaging services cache preview metadata. They may continue showing an older image after Shopify is saved. Shopify recommends using Facebook’s Sharing Debugger to request a fresh fetch of Facebook link information. Twitter Card Validator, Facebook’s crawler tools, and LinkedIn Post Inspector can also reveal what each crawler currently sees. A refresh request updates the platform’s stored preview; it does not rewrite images already embedded in old posts.
Search results are a separate system
A social-sharing image is not a guarantee of the image shown in search-engine results. If an outdated image remains in search, Shopify recommends resubmitting the sitemap so the search engine can recrawl the store. Recrawling time is controlled by the search engine, not by the Shopify preference itself.
Social-sharing image versus favicon

Changing the favicon will not repair a social preview, and changing the social-sharing image will not change the icon in a browser tab.
Troubleshooting checklist
The image saves but the preview is unchanged
- Confirm that you are testing the same URL you changed.
- Check whether the URL has a featured image.
- Inspect the theme editor for a Social media or Social sharing image.
- Look for theme code that sets its own Open Graph or social metadata.
- Run the URL through the relevant platform’s inspector to refresh cached data.
The homepage changed but a product page did not
This is expected when the homepage uses the Preferences fallback and the product has its own featured image. Edit the product’s featured image if that specific link needs a different card.

The picker does not show the file
- Confirm that the file is stored locally and can be opened normally.
- Export a fresh copy in a common web format.
- Try a smaller file if the upload stalls.
- Reload the admin page and repeat the selection.
If the setting still cannot be saved, test in a current browser with extensions disabled and verify that your staff account has permission to edit Online Store preferences.
A crawler reports no image
First confirm that the store is publicly reachable and that the exact URL is not blocked by a password page, bot challenge, or login requirement. Then inspect the theme’s generated metadata and check for a page-level image. A configured fallback cannot be used if the crawler cannot fetch the page or if theme code supplies an invalid image reference.
