Apify Actors can be chained into a multi-step workflow, and Apify MCP lets compatible AI clients discover and run Actors and retrieve their stored results. But the platform documentation does not establish that a particular agent is “source-safe,” or identify the three Actors in this headline. Without those implementation details, it would be misleading to present a first-person build. Here is the documented workflow—and what you must preserve to make source provenance auditable.
What Apify Actors and MCP do
Apify defines Actors as “serverless cloud programs that take a structured JSON input, perform a task (web scraping, browser automation, data processing, and more), and optionally produce a structured output.” Actors can be run through the Console, API, CLI, or a schedule, and combined into larger automations. Their schemas describe expected inputs and outputs; Apify storage holds Actor data, results, and files. Apify’s Actors documentation
The Apify MCP server provides an interface through which compatible AI applications, IDEs, and command-line clients can discover and run Actors and access storage and results. It can be connected as a hosted remote service or run locally using stdio. Apify MCP documentation
How to connect an MCP agent to Actors
Choose the connection method your client supports, then configure which tools or Actors it can access. The MCP documentation describes hosted Streamable HTTP with OAuth and local stdio; local stdio or bearer-token authorization requires a token. For a production setup, explicitly select the tools you need rather than relying on defaults, since available tools and defaults may change.

The default setup includes Actor and documentation tools and selected Actors. Documented tools include search-actors, fetch-actor-details, and call-actor; result access includes get-dataset-items. Availability depends on configuration. Check the current MCP tool documentation before relying on a particular tool name or default.
How to chain Actors and retrieve their outputs
Treat each Actor invocation and its result retrieval as separate operations. A successful call-actor response gives you run status and storage IDs; it is not the dataset contents. To pass records to the next stage, retrieve the run’s dataset using its dataset ID with get-dataset-items. A workflow can instead pass a storage reference where appropriate, but downstream logic then needs to resolve that reference.

- Identify an Actor and its contract. Use the available discovery and detail tools, or choose a known Actor. Check its input schema and expected output before invoking it.
- Run the first Actor. Send structured input through
call-actorand set run limits incallOptions. - Read the run result. Use the dataset ID returned with the run to fetch its items through
get-dataset-items. Do not treat the run response itself as the scraped or transformed records. - Prepare the next Actor’s input. Map the retrieved items—or a resolvable storage reference—into the next Actor’s declared input schema. Repeat the run-and-retrieve cycle for each stage.
Apify’s integrations overview describes combining Actors and tasks into multi-step workflows and connecting Apify with AI clients and frameworks. It does not specify a particular three-Actor sequence or prove that one sequence preserves sources. Apify integrations documentation
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSet run limits in callOptions
Apify documents maxTotalChargeUsd, maxItems, timeout, and memory as run controls passed through callOptions. Putting those names in an Actor’s input does not impose the documented limits. Keep the controls in the run options so they apply to execution as intended. Apify MCP agent onboarding documentation

What “source-safe” must mean in a real workflow
Access to Actors and datasets does not, by itself, establish provenance or prevent unsupported claims. “Source-safe” needs to describe safeguards in the specific implementation, not a guarantee of Apify MCP. For an auditable workflow, retain the original source URL and associate each extracted record with that URL through every transformation. When the agent makes a claim, keep a traceable mapping from that claim to the record or records supporting it; if the source is missing or sources conflict, the workflow should surface that condition rather than silently filling the gap.
Those are implementation criteria, not features confirmed for an unspecified agent. The exact three Actors, their schemas and handoffs, and any validation behavior are not established here, so no specific build can responsibly be described as having implemented these protections.

Actor access has limits
The Apify MCP server excludes full-permission Actors because running one requires a person’s approval, and excludes rental Actors because subscription-based use does not fit its on-demand execution model. If an expected Actor is unavailable, check whether it falls into one of those categories and review the current MCP configuration and documentation.
