A VS Code extension can help prevent malformed commit messages by checking the text in the Source Control input box before it is accepted. The key idea is validation, not generation: enforce rules you choose while leaving the wording to you. VS Code’s API exposes that input box and lets extensions read or set its value, but the available evidence does not establish the specific rules, implementation, tests, or release status of the extension described here.

Where a commit-message extension fits in VS Code

VS Code’s Extension API describes the Source Control input box as the place where users enter a message. The API exposes its value through SourceControlInputBox.value, so an extension can read the message or set it. A Source Control provider may also expose an acceptInputCommand to handle acceptance. See the VS Code Extension API reference.

For a Git-focused extension, the natural place to validate a commit message is the message field in the Source Control view. A useful flow is to inspect the text as it is written, identify a problem, and explain what needs attention before the user commits. The API documentation describes Source Control generally; whether a particular extension targets VS Code’s built-in Git provider, another provider, or both depends on its implementation.

What “solving bad commit messages” can mean

Bad can mean inconsistent format, an overly long subject, body lines that exceed a team’s limit, or a missing type prefix. These are examples of rules a validator could enforce, not confirmed features of the extension in this article’s title. A rule-based tool can flag a message and let the author revise it; it does not need to invent the message.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Validation versus generation

Validation checks text against explicit criteria. Generation proposes text based on changes. VS Code documents an AI-assisted commit-message action in Source Control that uses a configured utility model and has setup requirements; its availability and requirements can vary by version and configuration. That feature does not make AI necessary for validation. A deterministic checker can assess a message against configured rules without generating any text. See the VS Code source control guide.

Examples of rules in separate extensions

Marketplace products illustrate several possible approaches, but their features should not be attributed to this extension:

  • Git 50/72 Commit Message Formatter says it checks subject and body-line lengths, can flag a missing type: prefix, and offers quick fixes. Its listed defaults are 50 characters for the subject and 72 for lines; the listing also describes configurable settings.
  • vscode-commitlint says it can report errors and warnings as a message is written, highlight affected text, detect project configuration, and work in the built-in Source Control input or a full editor. It assumes commitlint configuration or user-provided rules.
  • VSCode Conventional Commits describes a picker for Conventional Commit messages and support for commitlint configuration. Its listing also mentions optional commit and push behavior; check the current listing and settings before relying on that behavior.

These examples show that the problem can be addressed through validation, highlighting, quick fixes, or guided formatting. They do not establish which technique, rule set, or interface the titled extension uses.

How validation relates to Git’s commit workflow

In VS Code, saving, staging, committing, and pushing are distinct actions. The message describes the commit; the commit is local until it is pushed to a remote repository. VS Code also supports writing a longer message in a COMMIT_EDITMSG editor when git.useEditorAsCommitInput is enabled. See the VS Code staging and committing guide.

  • Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
  • Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
  • Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

That distinction matters when deciding what a checker should do: validating a message in the input box addresses the text at commit time, not whether changes have been staged correctly or whether a commit has been uploaded. A tool that operates only on the Source Control input may also behave differently from one that supports the full commit-message editor; confirm the extension’s supported surfaces in its documentation.

What is known about the extension—and what is not

The VS Code API provides a grounded technical basis for building a commit-message validator in Source Control. The available information does not identify the extension’s repository or establish its exact rules, code, tests, compatibility range, or Marketplace listing. It therefore cannot support claims that this particular extension implements a 50/72 rule, Conventional Commits, quick fixes, AI generation, or any specific test coverage.

No named statistic or study figure establishes how common poor commit messages are, or how much an extension improves team outcomes. The practical case for a validator is narrower: teams can make their own format explicit and catch deviations while drafting, without requiring an AI-generated message.
