You can cast a live football stream only when the phone, TV or receiver, streaming app, and the particular match all support viewing on a TV. Start with the app’s Cast or AirPlay control; if it is missing or the stream stays on your phone, check the app’s TV support and the event’s rules before trying screen mirroring or a cable.
Check whether your phone, TV, app, and match are compatible
There is no universal phone-to-TV casting method. Google Cast requires a Cast-enabled app and compatible receiver; AirPlay requires an app and receiver that support AirPlay. Even if your devices support the same protocol, the app or the rights for a specific live event may prevent playback on a TV. Before buying a receiver or adapter, check the app’s TV options, support for Cast or AirPlay, match availability in your region, and any event-specific restrictions.
- Phone: Confirm the app supports the casting method available on your phone. Google’s documented casting flow lists Android 6.0 or later and iOS 12 or later as supported mobile-device baselines; that does not mean every app works on every device. Google’s Cast instructions
- TV or receiver: Check whether it supports Google Cast or AirPlay, or has a native app for the service showing the match.
- App and event: Check that the app supports TV playback for the particular match. A service can allow casting some content but restrict a live event.
Cast with Google Cast
Use this route if the TV has Google Cast or you have a compatible Google streaming receiver. The phone and receiver must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

- Open the official app carrying the match and start the stream, if needed.
- Tap the app’s Cast button. Its location varies by app.
- Select the TV or receiver from the device list.
If no Cast button appears, check whether the app supports Google Cast, update the app, and confirm both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network. A compatible phone and receiver alone do not make an app Cast-enabled. See Google’s guide to casting from enabled apps.

Stream with AirPlay from an iPhone or iPad
AirPlay works when the app and receiving device support it. Apple lists Apple TV, AirPlay-compatible TVs, and Mac as possible receivers. Connect the iPhone or iPad and receiver to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open the video app and start the football stream.
- Tap the app’s AirPlay button and choose the receiver.
- If the app has no AirPlay control, try Screen Mirroring from Control Centre, if supported.
Screen Mirroring is not a way to override an app’s playback rules. Apple warns that “Some video apps may not support AirPlay.” Consult Apple’s AirPlay and screen-mirroring instructions for device-specific steps.

Why a live match may play on your phone but not your TV
A phone-only stream may reflect the rights or playback rules for that particular event, rather than a fault with your Wi-Fi or TV. For example, NFL Support says its live local and primetime regular-season and postseason games on NFL+ and NFL+ Premium are only accessible on phones or tablets during those live events: “They cannot be cast to your television or other devices during such live events.” That restriction is specific to the games and services described by the NFL Support article, updated February 3, 2026; it should not be assumed to apply to other leagues or services.

Try an HDMI adapter only if the app permits TV playback
A wired connection is an optional fallback, not a guaranteed workaround. Apple says an appropriate Digital AV or VGA adapter can connect an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to a display. For a TV, check whether an HDMI/Digital AV adapter matches the phone’s connector and model. Some streaming video requires an HDCP-compatible digital connection, and may not display over a non-HDCP connection. App and event restrictions still apply. See Apple’s Digital AV adapter guidance before buying.
