To help gold jewellery stay clean and avoid unnecessary scratches, wipe it gently after wearing, dry it fully, and store each piece separately in a clean, dry case. Remove jewellery before swimming, chores, exercise, bathing, or applying cosmetics. First identify whether a piece is karat gold, gold plated, or rhodium-plated white gold: their finishes need different care, and delicate stones or construction may require maker-specific advice.
Does gold tarnish or scratch?
Yes. Tiffany states, “Gold does tarnish and scratch over time.” How a piece wears depends in part on its metal and finish; there is no universal cleaning schedule or lifespan that applies to every item.
How to clean gold jewellery safely at home
For routine care
- After wearing, wipe the jewellery gently with a clean, soft, slightly damp cloth.
- Dry it completely with a soft cloth before putting it away.
- If residue remains, check the maker’s care instructions before using a cleaner. For a piece confirmed suitable for gentle brushing, use a soft-bristled toothbrush and work carefully around crevices.
Do not assume a method that is safe for plain gold is also safe for every gemstone, adhesive, finish, or setting. The Gemological Institute of America cautions that chemicals can damage or discolor precious metals and may harm colored gems. It also notes that delicate jewellery may need professional cleaning rather than ultrasonic cleaning. If the care instructions are unclear, ask the maker or a jeweller before trying a cleaner or machine.

Use a clean, dry, organized jewellery case in a fairly temperature-controlled location. Keep pieces in separate compartments, individual soft pouches, or separate wrapping so they cannot rub against one another or tangle. Chains are especially prone to tangling when stored loose with other pieces. A fabric-lined case with dividers is one practical option; no case or lining can guarantee that jewellery will never tarnish.

What to keep jewellery away from
- Swimming: Remove fine jewellery before swimming in chlorine or salt water.
- Chores and chemicals: Take it off before household or outdoor work involving cleaning products. Avoid bleach and other household chemicals.
- Exercise and contact sports: Remove jewellery before workouts or activities where it may be exposed to impact or rubbing.
- Bathing and cosmetics: Keep jewellery off while bathing and, when practical, before applying lotions or cosmetics. Lotions can leave a film that makes a piece look dull.
Care depends on the metal and finish
“Gold jewellery” can describe different materials. The World Gold Council explains that 24-carat gold is pure gold, while lower-carat gold contains other metals; alloying affects colour and properties. Its examples include 14-carat gold at .583/.585 fineness and 18-carat gold at .750. These figures describe composition, not how often a piece needs cleaning.

When professional care is the safer choice
Ask the maker or a jeweller for advice when a piece has delicate gemstones, visible plating, an uncertain finish, or construction that makes home cleaning risky. Professional cleaning is also an option when buildup remains after gentle routine care. Jewelers of America recommends seeking piece-specific instructions from a jeweller; Tiffany offers professional cleaning in its stores.
