Discard anything labeled single-use, clean reusable sensor bodies only as directed, and apply the next sensor to clean, completely dry skin. If you develop significant irritation or inflammation, stop using the device and contact a healthcare professional.
First identify which parts may be reused
A wearable may be a single-use sensor, or it may have a reusable sensor body attached to disposable adhesive material. The instructions for the exact model determine what you can remove, clean, discard, or use again. Do not infer that a part is reusable because it looks intact, or because the device is designed to be worn for several days.
- Check the current user guide or product insert for your model and market.
- Look for separate instructions for the sensor, applicator, recorder, electrode patch, and adhesive.
- Check the maker’s directions for cleaning agents, water exposure, skin-site rotation, lifted adhesive, and skin reactions.
For example, Abbott says not to reuse FreeStyle Libre sensors or applicators, while Philips says its ePatch electrode patch cannot be reused after it is separated from the ECG recorder. By contrast, SENS motion describes removing and discarding used patch material and cleaning the sensor body for reuse; its support page cautions that some information may be outdated, so confirm against the instructions supplied with your device.
Remove the used wearable and adhesive gently
Use the removal method stated in the device instructions. Pulling or scraping aggressively can irritate or damage skin. If adhesive residue remains, a skin adhesive remover may be an optional aid only if the wearable’s instructions allow it and the remover’s own label is followed. Dexcom lists medical adhesive products and removal wipes as possible aids, but says its removal techniques summarize an independent clinical article and have not been tested or endorsed by Dexcom.

Do not use an accessory or removal product to justify reusing a part labeled single-use. Dispose of the sensor, patch, or applicator as directed; do not wash, store, or reapply disposable components for another wear session.
Clean reusable parts only as instructed
If the manufacturer explicitly says the sensor body is reusable, separate it from used adhesive material and clean it by the stated method. Do not assume that a skin-worn assembly is washable or waterproof, or that soap, alcohol, wipes, or another cleaner is suitable. Accu-Chek SmartGuide’s English manual identified as 2025-09 says, “Use only the minimum amount of soap to keep the sensor clean.” That is a product-specific instruction, not a general cleaning rule for wearables.

Prepare skin before applying the next sensor
- Choose an approved site and rotate sites if your product instructions require it.
- Clean the skin and let it dry completely before applying the next sensor or patch.
- Remove traces of old adhesive, and avoid moisturizer or body oil at the intended site where the maker advises this.
- Apply the new component as directed. Do not reapply a sensor that has fallen off or whose adhesive has lifted unless its instructions explicitly permit it.
Dexcom advises a flat, clean, completely dry site, removal of old adhesive, and avoiding moisturizers and body oils at the intended insertion area. Abbott likewise advises cleaning and drying the site and changing sites for the next sensor. Accu-Chek SmartGuide says not to reapply its sensor if it falls off or if the adhesive pad beneath it lifts. These directions are specific to those products; use your own device’s guidance where it differs.
Follow the device’s water and adhesion directions
Water exposure, reinforcement, and patch lifting are model-specific. Philips ePatch instructions dated 2024-01-11 say its electrode patch is single-use and caution against direct jets of water or other liquids. Dexcom’s UK FAQ describes optional reinforcement with an overpatch or medical tape, but that advice should not be transferred to other brands without checking their instructions. Dexcom also says third-party underpatches are not tested by the company. An overpatch can reinforce a permitted wear setup; it does not make a disposable sensor or adhesive reusable.

Stop if your skin reacts
Remove the device and seek healthcare advice if you have significant irritation, inflammation, damaged skin, or a reaction that keeps recurring. Abbott advises stopping use and contacting a healthcare professional for significant irritation. Accu-Chek SmartGuide instructs users to inspect for irritation and consult a healthcare professional for inflammation or localized reactions. Follow the wording in your own product’s instructions, and do not keep applying a sensor over skin that is reacting.
