Notion documents page covers, page content, and images in a Files & media property as preview sources. Its help documentation does not establish that adding a website URL automatically fetches that site’s thumbnail, so add or assign an image yourself for predictable results. Notion’s gallery instructions describe the available settings.
Set up a Gallery view and choose the thumbnail source
- Open the database. Add a view using the plus sign beside the database name or current view, then choose Gallery. If you already have a Gallery view, open it instead.
- Open the database settings menu at the top right and select Layout.
- Open Card preview and choose one of the available sources: Page cover, Page content, or a Files & media property.
- Supply an image through the source you chose: set a cover on each record, put an image in the first block of the page, or add an image file to the selected Files & media property.
Choose the source that fits how you maintain records

With Page content, ordering matters: put the desired image or video in the first block. A later image in the page is not the documented preview source for that setting.
Fit or crop the image on each card
In the gallery layout, use Fit image to control how the preview fills its frame. When it is on, the whole image fits inside the card; when it is off, the image is cropped to fill the frame. To change which part of an image appears, hover over it and select Reposition.
Does Notion fetch a website thumbnail from a URL?
Notion’s documented gallery options are page cover, page content, and an image in a Files & media property. The documentation does not establish that a URL property automatically fetches the linked website’s thumbnail. Do not rely on pasting a URL alone to populate a Gallery card image; use one of the documented image sources when you need a predictable preview.

Saving a link and choosing its card image are separate steps
Notion’s Reading List example describes using Web Clipper to save web pages and links to lists. That explains how to capture the source link, but it does not establish that clipping also assigns a Gallery thumbnail or fills an image property. After saving a link, check the record’s preview source and add an image through that source if needed.
