Zapier orchestrates the workflow; the connected screenshot service performs the capture.
What the workflow does
A practical Zap has three stages:
- Trigger: You press the Zapier Chrome extension’s New Push action while viewing a page.
- Capture: A connected screenshot app receives the page URL and renders an image or PDF.
- Destination: A later Zap step stores, emails, forwards, or otherwise processes the file or image URL.
The Chrome extension is documented as available only in Google Chrome (Zapier help article updated May 29, 2026). The default New Push payload includes the page title, URL, timestamp, and the person who triggered the Zap. You can add extra input fields when creating the push.
Do not assume every site will render identically. Login requirements, bot checks, consent dialogs, JavaScript timing, robots policies, and the connected service’s own limits can change the result. Verify the live fields and plan terms in your Zapier account before publishing a production Zap.
Build a browser-triggered screenshot Zap
1. Install and configure the Chrome extension
- Install the Zapier Chrome extension and sign in to the same Zapier account that owns the Zap.
- In Zapier, create a new Zap and choose Zapier Chrome extension as the trigger app.
- Select New Push as the trigger event.
- Give the push a name that describes the job, such as “Capture page for review.” Add any custom input fields you want to supply at trigger time.
- Test the trigger from Chrome while a representative page is open. Confirm that the sample contains the expected title and complete URL.
The trigger explanation in Zapier’s listing is: “A trigger is the event that starts a Zap—like a ‘New Push’ from Zapier Chrome extension.”

2. Add a screenshot action
Click the plus sign after the trigger and search for a screenshot app. The exact labels and available fields can change, so use the fields shown in your account. Map the trigger’s URL (or Website URL) into the screenshot action’s required website field.
Common choices listed by Zapier include:
| Service and action | Required input | Useful controls | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Screenshot API — Take Screenshot | URL or Website; Output Format | File type, full page, fresh capture, delay, load event, width, height, extraction, lazy loading, retina, dark mode, background, ad/cookie/tracking/chat blocking, selector, cookies, headers, proxy, injected CSS/JS, custom HTML, font blocking, blur/remove selectors, user agent | Detailed rendering and request control |
| GetScreenshot — Take Website Screenshot | Website URL; Full Page Capture | Width, highlight phrase, PDF output, extra wait, advanced strategy/CSS, and other API parameters | A straightforward live-site capture followed by another Zap action |
| HTML to Image — Convert URL to Image (Screenshot a Website) | Webpage URL | Full page, wait seconds, image quality, and whether to generate an image URL | Simple URL-to-image workflows |
Choose the service whose output and controls match your destination. A screenshot action may return binary file data, a hosted image URL, a PDF, or metadata. Use the test result to identify the exact field your next step should consume.
3. Set capture options
- Full-page capture: Enable it when you need content below the initial viewport. Long pages can take longer and may expose lazy-loading or sticky-header behavior.
- Dimensions: Set width and height when the design must match a device, report template, or social layout. If you omit them, the service’s default viewport applies.
- Format: Select PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF only when that service lists the format. JPEG usually produces smaller files; PNG preserves sharp text and transparency where supported.
- Wait or delay: Add a delay or choose a load event when content appears after JavaScript runs. Use the smallest reliable value rather than an unnecessarily long pause.
- Freshness: If the action offers “fresh screenshot,” enable it when a cached copy would be unacceptable. Caching can otherwise improve speed and reduce repeated rendering.
- Blocking and privacy: Ad, tracker, cookie, chat, font, or resource blocking can produce a cleaner or faster page, but may alter layout. Test the result against your intended use.
- Selectors: Use element capture only when you need a component rather than the entire page. GetScreenshot’s element action requires a CSS selector.
- Authenticated content: Cookies, headers, user agents, and proxies are available only where the selected integration exposes them. Treat credentials as secrets and avoid placing them in visible trigger fields.
4. Add a destination
Add a third step only after you know what the screenshot action returns. Select a destination available in your account—for example, cloud storage, an email app, a ticketing system, or a database. Map the returned file or image URL, then include the original page title and capture timestamp in the destination’s filename, subject, or record fields.
GetScreenshot also lists a screenshot-and-email action. If you use it, confirm whether it replaces the separate destination step. Its listing notes a Starter plan requirement for Zaps with three or more steps; treat that as listing-specific and verify current Zapier plan terms before relying on it.

5. Test the complete path
- Run the Chrome push on a page with visible, below-the-fold content.
- Inspect the captured URL in the screenshot step’s test output.
- Open the returned image or PDF and check viewport, full-page length, fonts, overlays, and dynamic content.
- Run the destination step and verify that the file is readable, named correctly, and accessible to its intended recipients.
- Turn the Zap on only after the test uses the same kind of pages and destination data as the live workflow.
Choose the right capture pattern
| Pattern | How it starts | What it captures | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chrome push | You press New Push while viewing a page | The URL supplied by the browser trigger | Human review, support tickets, QA, or ad hoc archiving |
| URL-to-image | A URL supplied by another trigger or app | The rendered page at that URL | Scheduled reports, form submissions, feeds, or batch jobs |
| Visual-change monitoring | Periodic polling | A new capture compared with the prior capture | Alerting when a page changes rather than taking a one-off shot |
| Element capture | A URL plus a selector | One DOM element | Capturing a price, chart, badge, or component without surrounding content |
Monitoring with Snapshot Site
Zapier lists Screenshots by Snapshot Site’s Website Changed trigger. It re-screenshots a URL at each polling interval, compares the new image with the previous one, and fires when the change exceeds the configured threshold. The first check establishes a baseline and does not fire. Its inputs include URL, minimum change, pixel sensitivity, dimensions, and full-page mode. This is a monitoring workflow, not a manual screenshot trigger.
Full page versus an element
Full-page mode is appropriate for documentation, audits, and complete landing pages. Element mode is more stable when only one region matters, but selectors can break after a site redesign, differ between responsive layouts, or fail when content is inside an iframe or shadow DOM. Keep a fallback full-page capture if the screenshot is business-critical.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is the first alternative to try when you want a direct screenshot API instead of configuring browser automation. One GET request accepts a URL and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or a PDF. It removes cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. It also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
Here is a minimal cURL call (see the ScreenshotNeo documentation for parameters):

The trigger test has no URL
Run New Push from an actual Chrome tab, not a browser window without a loaded page. Confirm the extension is signed into the correct Zapier account and that the trigger’s sample includes the URL field. Add a custom input field if you need the operator to provide a different URL.
The screenshot shows a consent banner, popup, or chat box
Use a service with blocking controls, enable the relevant cookie, ad, tracking, or chat options, and increase the wait only if the overlay appears after initial load. Blocking can change layout, so compare the cleaned capture with the page you intend to document.
The page is blank or incomplete
Try full-page mode, a load event, selector wait, network-idle wait, or a modest delay. Lazy-loaded images may need explicit lazy-loading support. A page that requires an interactive login, detects automation, or fails outside a normal browser may not be capturable by the selected integration.

The bottom of the page is missing
Enable full-page capture and test a page with substantial below-the-fold content. Some sites use nested scroll containers; a full-page document capture may not include content that is not part of the main document.
The next Zap step cannot use the result
Inspect the screenshot action’s test output. Map the binary file field when the destination expects an upload, or map the hosted image URL when it expects a link. If the action returns a PDF instead of an image, change the output format or use a destination that accepts PDFs.
An element capture fails
Check that the selector is valid on the captured page, wait for the element to appear, and account for responsive classes, iframes, and shadow DOM. A full-page capture is a useful diagnostic fallback.

The monitoring Zap fires unexpectedly
Raise the minimum-change threshold or adjust pixel sensitivity and dimensions. Animations, rotating ads, timestamps, personalization, and cookie state can create visual differences. Remember that Snapshot Site’s first poll sets the baseline and does not fire.

The Zap is delayed or costly
Use the smallest reliable wait, avoid full-page captures when an element is sufficient, and cache only when stale content is acceptable. For repeated URLs, consider a direct API with an explicit cache TTL or asynchronous jobs rather than keeping a browser-triggered Zap open.
Operational checklist
- Use Chrome for the documented browser trigger.
- Map the trigger’s complete URL, not only its title.
- Choose full page, element, or monitoring deliberately.
- Set viewport, format, wait, and freshness options for the actual site.
- Keep cookies, headers, and API keys out of public fields and logs.
- Test both the screenshot output and the destination step.
- Recheck app fields, plan limits, and permissions before relying on the Zap in production.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Zapier itself take the screenshot?
No. Zapier starts the workflow and passes data between steps; a connected screenshot integration renders the page.
Can a Chrome push capture a page I am not currently viewing?
The documented New Push pattern supplies the page currently used with the Chrome extension. For unattended URLs, use a URL-based screenshot action or a scheduled workflow instead.
