Choose a ready-made Actor or write your own
A ready-made Actor is the quickest path when its input options and output format fit your job. The Website Screenshot Capture Actor described in the Apify Store takes a list of URLs and captures each page using Playwright with headless Chromium. It supports viewport and full-page screenshots and PNG or JPEG output. Apify Actors can be run in the Console or through their HTTP API; the exact input and output schema belongs to the specific Actor you select.
Build a custom Actor when you need to control browser steps, choose your own storage keys, or integrate screenshot capture into existing processing logic. Apify’s JavaScript example uses Puppeteer: launch a browser, navigate to a URL, take a screenshot, then write the returned bytes into the default key-value store with an image content type.
Run a screenshot Actor
Prepare access and input
- Create or sign in to an Apify account and obtain an API token from the Console’s integrations settings. Treat the token as a secret; do not put it in public source code or a browser-side script.
- Open the selected screenshot Actor and check its current input schema, output schema, and Run endpoint. A minimal input shape documented for screenshot Actors is
{"urls":["https://example.com"]}. - Add only options supported by that Actor. Documented options across current screenshot Actors include
fullPage,format, device or viewport settings, color scheme, and selectors to hide. The names and accepted values are Actor-specific, so use its live schema rather than assuming every Actor accepts the same fields.
Run in the Console or API
For a first capture, submit the input in the Actor’s Console page and inspect the run output. To automate it, send an HTTP POST to the Actor-specific Run endpoint and include the token and JSON input as documented by that Actor’s API page. A typical endpoint pattern is:

Replace the owner and Actor name with the selected Actor’s exact identifier. The precise endpoint and request options should be taken from that Actor’s API tab; do not assume a placeholder endpoint is a working Actor. For synchronous integrations, Apify documents a run-sync-get-dataset-items endpoint where supported. It waits for a run and returns dataset items, but it does not guarantee that screenshots themselves are embedded in those items. Check whether the Actor returns image links, dataset records, or key-value-store output.
Example request shape
This cURL example shows the general POST shape for an Actor run. Substitute the actual Actor ID and include only fields its input schema supports:

A successful request starts a run; depending on the endpoint, the response may contain run details rather than the image file. Poll or retrieve the run’s documented output as appropriate. Some Actors return a fileUrl for each page, while others expose files through Actor output or key-value storage. Confirm this before building a downloader or assuming a dataset contains binary images.

Capture a screenshot in a custom Apify Actor
Apify’s JavaScript SDK example demonstrates the essential Puppeteer flow. The following is the core capture operation, using the SDK APIs shown in Apify’s documentation:

Run this inside an Actor project configured with the Apify SDK version and runtime appropriate to that project. The snippet illustrates the browser and storage calls; a production Actor should also validate input, handle navigation and browser errors, and close the browser even when a step fails. For example, a try/finally block prevents a failed navigation from skipping browser cleanup.
Full-page capture
To capture the full document rather than only the visible viewport, pass fullPage: true to Puppeteer’s screenshot call:

The Academy guidance uses the same fullPage option and saves the buffer with Actor.setValue(key, screenshotBuffer, { contentType: 'image/png' }). The resulting file can be inspected in the Actor Console’s key-value store. Apify also documents puppeteerUtils.saveSnapshot for saving a screenshot and HTML, with quality controls.
Capture multiple URLs
For a batch, accept an input object containing sources, create a request list, and run the capture flow for each URL. Save each screenshot under a distinct key derived from a stable identifier, such as an index or sanitized hostname, rather than writing every image to the same key. The Apify multi-URL example allows cloud input to be entered in the UI or passed as the POST payload to the Run Actor API call. Validate URLs and handle individual failures so one inaccessible page does not silently erase results for other pages.

Find and retrieve the image
Where a screenshot is stored depends on the Actor. For the custom SDK route above, setValue writes the image into the run’s default key-value store under the key you choose; use the Actor Console’s key-value store view to inspect it. For a ready-made Actor, review its output schema: it may provide a fileUrl, expose a stored file, or publish references in dataset items. Download from the location the Actor documents, and retain the run ID or output record needed to associate files with their source URLs.
Use a meaningful content type such as image/png when saving PNG bytes. If you request JPEG from a ready-made Actor, verify its output type and extension before downstream processing. Do not infer image format from a filename alone if the Actor’s schema is available.
Decide what capture settings to use

Understand access limits and operational trade-offs
The researched screenshot Actor describes captures of what an anonymous visitor sees. A URL that requires login may therefore show a sign-in page rather than protected content. Bot-protected pages can return an error or block page. The current Actor documentation also says credentials embedded in URLs, localhost, private networks, and unsupported web schemes are refused.
Before scheduling a large batch, test representative pages and inspect the actual images. Include different page types, redirects, long pages, and sites with consent or promotional overlays. A successful run does not necessarily mean every URL produced the expected page: inspect per-URL status and output rather than treating the run’s overall completion as proof of capture quality.
Actor pricing, quotas, run limits, and maintenance can change. The Apify Store listing accessed in 2026 displayed a community pricing example of $5.00 per 1,000 results for the researched Actor; verify the live listing and your account’s current terms before forecasting recurring costs. Batch size and full-page image dimensions also affect the amount of data your workflow must store and retrieve.

- Unauthorized or token error: confirm you copied the API token from the Apify Console integrations settings, that it is active, and that the request sends it in the documented location. Avoid logging the token in shared logs.
- Actor rejects the input: compare the JSON keys and value types with that Actor’s current input schema. Options such as
fullPageandformatare not guaranteed to be shared by all Actors. - The run starts but no image appears: inspect the Actor’s run output and key-value store. A synchronous dataset response may contain records or URLs rather than image bytes; retrieve the documented file location.
- The screenshot shows a block or error page: the site may be bot-protected, inaccessible anonymously, or returning an error to the browser. The researched Actor is designed for anonymous visitor views; it does not establish a way around access controls.
- Private or local target is refused: localhost, private networks, credentials in the URL, and unsupported schemes are listed as refused by the current Actor documentation. Use a publicly accessible supported URL and an appropriate authentication method only if the Actor explicitly supports one.
- Screenshot cuts off below the fold: enable full-page mode using the Actor’s documented option or Puppeteer’s
{ fullPage: true }. Check the capture dimensions if the page is exceptionally long. - Saved file has the wrong content type or extension: match the key-value store content type and downstream filename to the actual bytes. For the custom example, the documented save call labels the image as
image/png. - One URL prevents a batch from completing: handle errors per request, record the URL and failure reason, and continue with the rest of the list where your Actor design allows it.
