The quickest way to capture a website on Windows is Windows+Shift+S. It opens Snipping Tool, where you can select a rectangle, freeform region, window, or the entire display. That captures what is on your screen. If you need the entire webpage—including content below the fold—use Microsoft Edge DevTools and choose Capture a full size screenshot. The two results are different: a full-screen snip is a display image, while a full-size DevTools capture is intended to include the page outside the current viewport.
Choose the method that matches what you need

Windows 10 and Windows 11 include Snipping Tool. Edge’s Screenshot feature is documented for supported Edge versions beginning with version 87, but an administrator can disable it. Dynamic pages, embedded frames, lazy-loaded content, and browser-version differences can affect full-page results; inspect the output and capture sections separately when necessary.
Capture a visible part of a website with Snipping Tool
- Open the website and arrange the browser so the content you want is visible.
- Press Windows+Shift+S. A capture overlay appears.
- Choose a mode: Rectangular snip for a box, Freeform snip for an irregular shape, Window snip for a browser window, or Full-screen snip for the display.
- For a rectangular or freeform snip, drag around the content. For a window snip, select the browser window.
- Select the notification or open Snipping Tool to annotate, crop, copy, save, or share the image. Microsoft documents Ctrl+C for copying and Ctrl+S for saving.
New Snipping Tool captures are automatically saved to the Screenshots folder according to Microsoft’s current documentation. You can change automatic-save behavior or the location in Snipping Tool Settings. A full-screen snip means the entire monitor display; it does not automatically scroll through a webpage.
When the shortcut does not behave as expected
Print Screen assignments vary. Windows settings may make the Print Screen key open screen snipping, and individual applications can handle the key differently. Use Windows+Shift+S when you need the consistent Snipping Tool overlay.

Copy the active browser window with Alt+Print Screen
- Click the browser window so it is active.
- Press Alt+Print Screen.
- Open an image editor, document, or message and press Ctrl+V to paste the clipboard image.
This shortcut captures the active window rather than a selected webpage element. It is useful for a quick record of the browser chrome and visible page, but it does not produce a scrolling capture of content below the fold. Shortcut behavior can vary by application and Windows settings.
Capture an entire webpage in Edge DevTools
Edge DevTools has a specific full-size command for a page that extends beyond the current viewport.
- Open the target page in Microsoft Edge.
- Open DevTools by right-clicking the page and selecting Inspect, or press Ctrl+Shift+I.
- Turn on Device Emulation with the device-toolbar button, or use the DevTools menu to show the device toolbar.
- Open More options on the device-emulation toolbar.
- Select Capture a full size screenshot.
- Wait for the image to be generated, then open it from the browser download prompt or your configured downloads location.
The command is designed to include webpage content that is not currently visible in the viewport. Before capturing, scroll through the page once if it uses lazy loading, verify that important sections have rendered, and close transient overlays that would otherwise appear in the image.
What full-size capture cannot guarantee
- A script-driven page may change while it is being captured.
- Lazy-loaded images may remain unloaded if the page has not triggered them.
- Content inside an embedded frame can follow different capture behavior from the surrounding document.
- Cookie dialogs, chat widgets, sticky headers, and animations can cover content.
- A browser or site can produce an incomplete image even though the command succeeds.
Open the resulting file and compare it with the rendered page. If a section is missing, capture that section separately or adjust the page state and repeat the command rather than assuming every dynamic site will produce an identical result.

Use Edge Screenshot for web or PDF content
Edge also provides a user-facing Screenshot feature, formerly called Web Capture. It can capture web and PDF content and lets you annotate the result. When enabled, you can invoke it with Ctrl+Shift+S, from the page context menu, or from Edge’s Settings and more menu.
An organization can disable Screenshot/Web Capture through Edge policy. If the command, menu item, or shortcut is absent on a managed computer, ask your administrator whether the feature has been disabled. This tool is convenient for browser-native annotation, but use DevTools’ full-size command when your requirement is specifically the whole page beyond the viewport.
Prepare a page for a reliable capture
Set the page state first
- Dismiss cookie or privacy notices when you are allowed to do so.
- Close chat bubbles, newsletter prompts, and other overlays.
- Expand accordions or menus whose content must appear.
- Set the desired zoom level, viewport width, and light or dark theme.
- Wait for fonts, images, and client-rendered data to finish loading.
Protect sensitive information
Review the address bar, account names, notifications, bookmarks, and page data before sharing. Use a rectangular snip or crop to exclude secrets. Redact copied images in an editor rather than relying on a temporary on-screen selection.
Keep a reproducible record
For work documentation, record the URL, capture date, browser version, viewport or device-emulation setting, and whether the image is a viewport, window, display, or full-page capture. This prevents someone from mistaking a screen image for a complete page archive.

Troubleshoot common screenshot problems
The result contains only what was visible
You used Snipping Tool, Alt+Print Screen, or a full-screen snip. Those methods do not automatically scroll a webpage. Repeat the capture in Edge DevTools with Device Emulation and Capture a full size screenshot.
The page is cut off or sections are blank
Check that lazy content loaded, scroll through the page, wait for network activity and animations to settle, and try again. For a persistent problem, capture the page in sections. Embedded frames and application-generated content may not be included exactly like ordinary document content.
A popup or chat panel covers the page
Close the panel before capturing. If it reappears, wait for the page to finish loading, use a private test state where appropriate, or hide the obstructing element with the browser’s developer tools before making a documentation image.
Windows+Shift+S does nothing
Confirm that the keyboard focus is not being intercepted by a remote-desktop or full-screen application. Try opening Snipping Tool from Start, then check Windows keyboard and Snipping Tool settings. A managed device may restrict features.

Alt+Print Screen pastes the wrong thing
Click the intended browser window immediately before pressing the shortcut. If the application handles the key differently, use Windows+Shift+S and choose Window snip.
Edge Screenshot is missing
The feature may be disabled by organizational policy or unavailable in the installed Edge configuration. Use DevTools for a full-page image, or contact the administrator of the managed device.
